Thanks,

This is a tough choice; both are superb lenses in their respective classes
and I think the decision comes down to whether you need/want the extra
stop of speed on the FD 80-200 f/4.0L or the extra 100mm of focal length
on the 100-300 f/5.6L.
Both will take the 1.4X extender (incidentally, "TC" is Nikon terminology
- heresy!) and both will take one of the 2x extenders, though each takes
a different one and I can't recall just now which lens takes which
extender (2X-A or 2X-B).
Perhaps the solution to the dilemma is get the 80-200L and the 1.4x,
which provides both the speed (at least from 80 to 200mm) and the focal
extension (160 to 400mm at f/5.6, though with a little loss in quality).

Ther 80-200 L lens will definitely NOT work with the Canon 1.4x
teleconverter. The rear element of the zoom lens interferes with
the front element of the TC. Third party TC's without protruding
front elements may work.

I stand corrected; the FD "Lens Work" book indeed indicates the 1.4x is intended
only for fixed focal-length lenses of 300mm or greater, so (for the
benefit of the
original poster) the FD 80-200 f/4.0L will _not_ work with the extender 1.4x.
Throws the choice back to the original dilemma of the 4.0 aperture of the
80-200L
vs. the 300mm focal length of the 100-300L.
