I was replacing the film in my Minolta X-700 the other day and the mirror
is now stuck up and the film advance lever will not move. Pressing on the
shutter release does nothing.

Here's what happened... I removed the old film without a problem and
started threading in the new film. I set the shutter speed to 1/1000
and snapped a shot, then tried to advance the film. The advance would
not move and I could not see anything through the viewfinder. When I
took off the lens, I noticed that the mirror was in the up position.

I suspected a bad battery and replaced it, but I am still unable to get
the mirror down, either by hitting the shutter release (no action) or
moving the film advance lever (won't budge).

Is there something I can do or does this sound like a repair job?

Thanks,
-Jeff

A camera repair book I read recently (sorry, don't have the title handy,
it was from the local library), mentioned that most SLRs are susceptible
to the mirror losing tension (usually due to a knock of some sort?),
which locks up the camera.

The 'repair' is usually merely _gently_ returning the mirror to its
normal position to re-tension the spring. I'm not familiar with the
X-700, and I've never attempted this sort of thing myself - the book
suggests it is a straight-forward operation, so at least it shouldn't be
overly expensive if you don't feel comfortable attepting it yourself.

Roger.
