When I came to load a new film into my Olympus XA2 I found that I could
not forward the film. This seems to be because the shutter button
appears to be stuck.

Has anyone any ideas as to how to release it?

Thanks

The shutter will not operate without batteries

Thanks for the reply but the camera has batteries and was operating
normally before trying to load the new film.

If I recall, this series has an electronic shutter release. Perhaps instead of
being stuck, there is dust or debris between the contacts. That's the rub; how
to get the shutter button off to expose the switch! Pehaps use a little bit of
lighter fluid (not too much, else it will drip into the lens and shutter) to
the switch and blow dry (at least it wont hurt it.

There is also, I think, a switch for the clamshell. Perhaps the camera thinks
the clamshell is still closed. Try cycling it open and closed. Try this first
before dripping solvent! If the UK is like the USA the repair will be more than
the camera is worth,a shame.

Let us know if this helps (or hurts).

The shutter button, if I remember correctly, doesn't use the typical
contacts mentioned in the post below. (Check with someone more
current about repairing this model camera to be sure.) I have an XA
that uses -- I'm pretty sure -- a piezo type device to trip the
shutter. The idea was to build a release that minimized the vibration
transmitted by its use to the camera. Pressure on a piezo device
causes a current to flow. The circuit tied to this device senses the
current flow and causes the shutter mechanism to operate. -Dave

Check the following web site, under Photography::

The gent apparently has done some homework with this camera.

Good luck.

The XA series release buttons move a fraction of a milimeter
anyway (most in the XA series are electrical switches, floating on a thin
rubber pad the conducts electricity as it is compressed). Most likely
something else has caused your camera to jam.

John, That fraction of a mm means that my XA has a hair trigger. Is there a
way to add a little more resistance? I'm used to the hair trigger but most
times when someone else takes a picture it gets snapped before ready.

Most bystanders are not ready for how easy the XA releases, and most of the
time, noone even HEARS the shutter go off. There are springs inside the
release that can be adjusted to make the release a little tighter, but it
doesn't change it that much.
