Does anyone know what kind of equipment do the top fashion
photographers, such as Richard Avedon and Bruce Weber use?

I don't know about Weber, but Avedon is well known for using
two types of cameras-Rolleiflex TLR's for their quality and mobility,
and 8x10 view cameras for his controlled portrait work. Try to find
the May/June 1994 issue of American Photo...the issue is dedicated
to Avedon and is loaded with pictures, as well as a peek into his
camera closets and a chart of his well known high-key lighting
setup.
My guess is that Weber uses a great deal of M/F as well
as 35mm...his advertising work is incredible.

Some do, but many others use the Mamiya RZ67 and Avedon, himself, uses a
Rollei.

Steven Meisel: Pentax 67 (using RZ stuff lately).
Kurt Markus: Pentax 67 and Horseman VHR
Ellen Von Unwerth: Nikon
Paolo Roversi: 8x10 D'dorf w 450mm and Pola
Bruce Weber: Pentax 67 and Plaubel 67
Fabrizio Ferri: H'blad 205FCC

Others use Pentax, Mamiya and Bronica 645's. Rollei, H'blad, Kowa,
Bronica, Mamiya 66's and Mamiya, Bronica, Pentax 67's. Many use Speed
Graphic's and Graflex Super D's; even Gowlandflex's and Mentor 4x5 SLR's.

In short, most use medium format or larger and as a group, they use the
entire range of available choices.

For 35mm, do you know what do they use?

mpphoto is the only person to respond to this question so
far who mentions lighting, as well as brand of camera.
I'd think studying the lighting (the setups, flash vs. hot
lights, and so on - not so much X vs. Y brand of flash unit!)
used by fashion photographers would be more rewarding, and
more interesting, than what brand of film-holding box they
use. But what do I know?

I think that the main problems was the question. There are thousands
of great and not so great fashion photogs out there, and they shoot in
many different situations. The majority of shots that you see in a
magazine are carefully planned and lit, and require studio-like
conditions. The equipment used is very different from the photographers
who are shooting the fashion runways. So, what kind of fashion
photography are you talking about?

What type of fashion?? Good question. I saw the Sports Illustrated swim
wear special on TV and Walter Iooss Jr. was using a Canon Eos1N w/zoom.

don't they all use 2 bodies with AF lenses, shoot 300 models a month, and
live in S. Florida?

:)
