The 8008s will not matrix meter with manual focus lenses. Because of
that it will not do matrix balanced fill flash with those lenses. The
center-weighted meter will work fine; thus, you can do center-weighted
balanced fill-flash. The difference will probably be small. In theory,
the more sophisticated analysis of the ambient light provided by matrix
metering will provide more pleasing balanced fill-flash ratios than will
center-weighted metering, but in practice this is hard to see very
often. The key to all this is the "man/sun" symbol on the back of the
flash. If it shows solid you are in balanced fill flash mode, with
either matrix or center-weighted ambient metering (depending on the
camera setting). If the "man/sun" symbol is blinking or disappears you
are in standard flash mode. ( The camera makes no attempt to balance
flash to ambient, and thus usually there is too much exposure
contributed by the flash.)
You lose:
- matrix metering (including matrix balanced fill flash)
- shutter priority automatic
- programmed automatic
All else functions. The camera will even give you a focus assist
indicator to help you focus accurately.
