I'd like to create a painting similar to Leonardo Da Vinci's "Mona
Lisa" and I was wondering if anyone knew what brand of paintbrush he
used. I've been trying all kinds of brands, but I guess I just
haven't found the right one yet because all of my paintings still look
like stick figures.

Are you implying that he's a few bristles short of a brush? :)

Well, it does help to have good quality paint and brushes. (Oil-based, not
finger-paint.) And be sure to paint on canvas, not cardboard.

I have it on very good authority that Leonardo used a Stanley two inch for
details, and a Stanley 6 inch for backgrounds.

Just don't use a zoom brush....You can't get a really good
painting unless you use fixed width brushes......

Those 50mm brushes are no use. They are so boring. What use would anyone
have for them? Does anyone still use a "normal" brush anymore?

Personally I always felt the 50mm sable brush was a bit too normal, so I
went for a bristle 25 --- man what a difference!

Thanks for all your great advice guys! Now I am assured that it's not
me but my crappy equipment. That's what I get for only paying $300
for my easel!

Then I started dabbling in medium format paintings using prime 12" rollers.
Never looked back since...

Paul,

Until you get the same canvas, and paints you're wasting your
time with the brushes.

The best easel in the world won't do a thing for composition.
What you need is a Rolodex mirror system, and a shoot by the numbers
model inscribed on each mirror. You listening, Nikon? One mirror for
every famous shot ever taken should do it. Bob

No, but I have a Wimberly brush, which makes it so easy to change the stroke
angle, especially when dabbing at my Velveeta palette.
