Does anyone know the difference between the Nikon N70 and the N70QD.

Thank you,

Mike D. (del...@tir.com)

I saw an ad in a British photo magazine that listed a "regular" and a
"data back" version of the N70. I suspect the N70QD is the data back
version....

The data back version is F70D (non US version).

The QD has a data back (Quartz Date?) and 'panoramic' function.

Yes, the N70QD is a "regular" N70 with a databack (Quartz Date). That's
it.

Actually that's not quite "it." The QD also provides the capability to
take "panorama" photos which can be developed into panoramic format.
The N70 alone does not have this feature (at least according to the
small addendum QD "manual" which came with my recently purchased N70
QD.) I was not actually aware of this additional feature until getting
the camera and perusing the QD manual addendum. Other than that, I
don't think the QD offers any additional features.

The N70QD has a quartz date/time imprintable back (like the MF-25 for the
N90). There is also a lever on the back for "panoramic shots". All this
means is that metal leafs come out into the shutter plane to block the top
and bottom 1/4 of the film negative to give the panoramic dimensions. The
viewfinder has guides for panoramic shots. I paid an extra $50 for it,
but have never used either functions.

Regards,
Stephen

I also paid the extra $50 for the QD and have used both the panoramic
function and the date stamp. I go hiking, and I had a habit of losing
track of which photos are from each trip. I know I could simply take
notes and get organized, but I never seem to do it. Since I usually do
a roll of film for each trip, now I simply take a photo of the trailhead
sign (with the group around it) or some recognizable landmark (again
with the group) and imprint the date. Now my photos are much more
organized. I know the date and the location and get a nice group photo
to boot.

It costs me $1.60 to develop each panoramic shot in double prints. The
prints come out 4x10 inches, which means they come out blown up to the
same size as a regular 8x10 blowup would be for a full frame. This lets
me test different films to see how grainy they would become at a full
8x10 size, without paying the cost to actually enlarge a photo.

The resulting prints in the panoramic format are pretty nice, but they
can be grainy if you aren't using slow film. I have some pretty nice
panoramic shots of sunset over the Rockies that definitely get a few
"ooohs" and "aaahs" when I show my prints to people. It's a gratifying
response. I don't begrudge the extra $50.

I know Nikon makes the N70QD with a databack, but is it possible to purchase a databack separately and put it on an N70?

I don't believe you can get the databack separately for the N70. I say
that because the panoramic switch on my N70 is actually on the body
itself, not on the databack. However, it is probably possible to have
your N70 refitted with the databack, but I don't know what the cost
would be. Why don't you call your local camera retailer and ask them?

No, the N70 's back is not removable, so you can't attach a new back.

Not in the United States, but possibly elsewhere. The back is easy to
remove and re-install.

I have an N70QD (F70D). The difference between F70 and F70D is not just
in the data back. The D version has panorama switch on the body,
panaroma lines and LEDs in the viewfinder. Can't change an F70 into
F70D just by adding the databack. Even for printing the date on the
film, I think the databack needs to know the filmspeed.

When I asked Nikon about a date back for the N70, I was told that the camera would have to be purchased that way. Then, why is there a pin on the back door?
That was my question to Nkion. Their answer...to make it easier, faster, and cheaper to replace the back door if it ever became damaged.
The N70 QD also have a couple of pins inside to connect to the date back...the STANDARD N70 is missing the pins. Sure, you could put a N70 QD back onto a standard N70, but, it would not work!

Nope!
While the standard N70 does have a pin on its back door...the camera does not have the control pins inside the camera to make it work. Sure, you could put a QD Back on a standard N70, but, it would not work without a single from the camera.
