I am thinking to buy Nikon 28-70/2.8 AFS lens, but decided to check out
other brands like
Tokina 28-80mm/f2.8 ATX Pro or Tokina 28-70mm/f2.6-f2.8 ATX Pro-II.

Could someone give me their opinions about these 2 lenses please. I
know probably Nikon lens is much sharper but I need to know how good
these other two.

I used to know a URL for lens comparison chart. If someone knows please
forward that URL to me.
Thanks in advance.

Might be photodo.

Also, check http://www.photographyreviews.com

I wrote a Review of the new Tokina 28-80 for Shutterbug magazine. But some
folks here think I love every lens equally, so I won't mention my findings.

(shhh....it's truly a PRO lens in all respects, but autofocus with the Nikon
AF-S is much faster/quieter.)

I just received mine a few days ago. Handling is superb -- this is the
best-handling zoom lens I ever had. Instant switching between AF and MF
is great. Hood is relatively compact, reversible and sits on the lens
securely. I cannot comment on the optical qualities yet but I do not
expect anything but superb results from this lens.

This might sound rough, but what are your real requirements?

The Tokina lenses are probably quite good (all tests suggest that) and it
is likely that if you don't have very (I mean *very*) high standards, you
will not find them lacking in any important respect.

OTOH, if you want to economize, why not economize aggressively ?

A used Nikkor 35-70 f/ 2.8 would be even lower in price, probably keep it's
resale vale better (making it more realistic to upgrade). Everyone agrees
that this lens's optical quality is great, but you'll lose a little focal
length in the long end (unimportant) and some in the short end (more
important, perhaps).

Just a thought.

I have the 28-70 Pro II and I love this lens. I have heard that this
lens is just as sharp as the Nikon (if not more) at f4. A reviewer
(can't remember which one) said there wasn't a sharper zoom in this
range at f4. Compared to the Nikon it was said the Tokina had a touch
more contrast. Nearly imperceptable differences though. You won't be
disappointed. Every pro I know has a Tokina Pro lens and no one has
ever complained, in fact they talked me into my first one. Now I own 3.

I'm using a 2.6~2.8/28-70 ATX PRO II for several years now. I'm very
happy with the lens. I do mainly slide photography on Velvia so image
quality is a big issue for me. Compared to my other lenses, which are
all Nikkor primes or far more expensive Nikkors, I'm very impressed
about the optical quality. I decided to go for the Tokina because that
days the only Nikkor available was the 35-70/2.8 which is a very old
lens and has several disadvantages.

A few things:

* according to two german magazines, the 2.6~2.8/28-70 is optically
superior to the new 2.8/28-80, however.

* the 2.6~2.8/28-70 ATX PRO II has a little fall off at the edges and
isn't as sharp at the edges wide open at 28mm like a 28mm prime.
Stopping down improves that.

* it is heavy, but very solid.

* works fine on F801, F4s, and F100.

Bye,

Andi
