It could be something slightly different; the mirror may have stuck to a
perished mirror bumper (black foam seal in the viewfinder). The foam
gets sticky as it perishes (degrades) and can adhere to the mirror.
Replacing the seal with new foam should cure it. You can do it yourself
but in view of the delicacy of the mirror in its present state it might
be a job best left to a competent camera repairer. If you do it
yourself, you can get the foam from:

I strongly agree, since I've been through this with my own FE2.
First, try another new battery. If that doesn't work, clean the
contacts in the battery chamber. If you've already done that, do it
again.
