1a) This is NOT neccesarilly a survey of what your camera(s) have right now.
2) Please put a score of 0 -10 beside these regarding the IMPORTANCE TO
YOU of the feature/function, with 10 being the most important. How you
determine the importance to you is your affair, but as a guide something
that you use always (10), often (7), sometimes (5), rarely (2), never
(0). It is harder to evaluate something like DOF-preview for me, as I
use it a lot in a few situation and I use it seldomly most of the time.
BUT I DO NEED IT! I'll score it an 8 I guess.
2a) The next thing to put is a "MUST HAVE" (Y). Regardless of the
weight you put, put a Y if you must have it.
eg:
EXAMPLE:
Mirror Lockup 7 Y
Means it is sometimes important, but you wouldn't buy a camera without it.
4) Then re-post or e-mail. I'll compile the results and post when the
rate of returns peters out.
(note: e-mailing the result is best, my NG does not pick everything up,
of late)
Notes:
--Please put "particular comments" BELOW the list (to make it easy for
me to sort the wheat from the chaff)
--If I missed something, please reply seperately for discussion.
--I did not group these, just jotted them down as they occured to me, or
as I found them in various lists.
--I will not be doing a consistency check of the results. So if
somebody rates:
Eye-control focus 10 Y
Auto Focus 0
It is obviously a non-consistent input. But I won't be policing these.
Have fun.
Cheers,
Alan

What's the difference between screaming amateur and pretty darned good amateur?
At the least, I'm a lot better than average joe snapshot. I'm, however,
still training my eye(s) and technical skills.

Velvia, NPH, Superia so far. I'm still trying out a lot of films, however.

Don't really know what this is supposed to accomplish - other than
showing my preference for manual, natural light photography. Less
is more.

..accomplishes? Not much, but I suspect that certain "high value
features" are going to show pretty low in the results.
Screaming amateur: the clueless (A certain D60 shooter comes to mind)
Pretty darned good: anyone whe loves and works at their photogrphy
Pro: one who pays the mortgage with his photo fees.
I'll probably do a lens "qualities" survey soon, but I'll have to be
much more deliberate in how I compose the questions.
Cheers and thanks again,

Mostly tried all these at some point, and still doing many of them. Current
pursuits towards more abstract work, and incorporating motion into my images. I
have done one wedding at the request of a friend, and despite the pay would
rather never do another one. Not so big on landscape photography, though I do
have one of my images going into a gallery show starting next weekend.

Professional, with the inconsistent pay to show for it. This has been too much
of feast or famine; when it is good, it is really good . . . but when it is
bad, it is non-existent. I spend more time meeting and writing proposals than
doing photography. Hopefully, this can improve a bit if I can attract an agent.

Comments: Bracketing can be done manually, and I do not really think it is a
feature. Auto bracketing is a program feature of some camera bodies. I think
only one of these questions is needed.
Other items I would consider:
Viewfinder aperture readout
Viewfinder shutter readout
Film frame number readout
Changeable finder screens

color film as I think would be suitable for the photographs I intend

candid pictures. However, my favorite's in B&W are Kodak's TriX400 and
Illford's XP-2 Super. I have been very interested in Illford SFX200
and intend to use it more often to become familiar with its capabilities.

I've never owned a camera that winds reloaded film on to the frame you
tell it to - but I know that I would take to it REAL FAST! On the other hand
I'm certain my next camera will be digital and it will be academic to say
the least.

Tony,
the Pentax MZ-S will do this, and it is every bit as useful as you would
expect. I quite often remove part used rolls and then put them back in, and
I only waste one frame as a 'safety gap' between the last one of the old
session and the first one of the new session. Very good when travelling,
both save carrying so many bodies when switching between films, and to
remove film from bodies before flying.
Of course, I do this with manual wind cameras too, so really this is only a
way of getting back in a power wound body what I always could do - the LX
has a very accurate frame spacing that lets me wind back and forth between
frames with very nearly pin register accuracy, so this is a good body to do
this with too.

I've never shot a "safety frame" when re-loading a partly used roll, and
I've never had a double exp. (Maxxum 9, 7xi). On the 9, although it has
the feature to advance to a specific frame, I just cap the lens, go to
smallest aperture/highest speed and shoot my way to the frame I want.
Cheers,
Alan
I probably don't need to either - but film is cheap, re-shoots aren't, so I
just play it 'extra' safe.
