I've had my N60 for about 2 years now. I finally changed the
batteries. About half way through my 2 or third roll of film and 6
months later my camera doesn't want to autofocus. The batteries show
good on the display. It will try to focus but, it's almost like it
doesn't know what you are even pointing at. It works the same whether
you are out in the sun or using the flash. The only thing besides the
battery that is different is I'm using a different kind of Kodak film.
Does anyone have any idea what would cause this problem?

Thanks,
Kevin

Does it hunt for a focus, or doesn't it move at all?

It does try to hunt for a focus, but never truely focuses. Sometimes
it's close to focus and sometimes it's not even in the ballpark. It
does seem to be a little on the sluggish side. I don't know if it is
because it doesn't know the target or some other reason.

Wow, two years with a set of batteries. And they say that these things
eat batteries like I eat chips...

Just to be sure: check if the AF/MF switch on the front of the camera
is set to AF...

I would put my money on the batteries. For a very good reason that I
keep forgetting, by the time the camera knows that the batteries are
dying, they're already dead. So the fact that it's showing good
doesn't mean they actually are (still following me?). Anyway, there
are various reasons that will make batteries fade. 6 months is about
average life I would think but I would expect someone who use ~6 rolls
of film a year to keep them longer.

Is it the manual focus kind? Just kidding it's either the batteries or
your focus mechanism is screwed (or you've put the switch on MF).

Based on my experience with an N70 and F100, I'm betting it's batteries
too. Try a fresh set, preferably Lithium. A number of drug stores and
office supply stores sell the Lithium AAs and I find they work much
better than alkaline AAs in the camera bodies I have used.

Clean the battery terminals on battery and camera using pencil eraser.
If you still have the problem it is identical to what happened to me
after 2 years with my N-60. I had an extended warranty and sent it to
Nikon. They said they replaced "Major auto focus parts"!

Well I took everyones advice and got a new set of batteries. Same
thing though. It got me suspicious. I tried to manually focus and the
picture but it still would not focus clearly. The problem was someone
adjusted the Diopter adjustment on the eye piece for near-sighted or
far-sighted photographers. So, there was no problem at all and I
should get the bone head award for wasting your time. I do appreciate
all the help and I apologize.

Sincerly,
Kevin

PS the good thing is I won't have to run to the store for a nother set
of batteries.

What are you trying to focus on ? The N60 will have some problems focusing
on horizontal lines or white walls.

Maybe it just needs a cleanup ?

The N60 has a problem focusing on anything! I was so disappointed with mine
I went over to an F80 - much better.
The lowlight focusing capability of the N60 is awful and it creeps badly
with longer focal lengths too.

Perhaps it's time to discover the joys of manual focusing. No creep, no
problems with low light, works every time. Good shooting.
