I just wonder why they didn't use one of those 60MP Hasselblads - would
have reduced shooting time to 1/3. Perhaps lack of a 600mm lens?

By the way, the AF of one of the Canon DSLRs failed, forcing the
photographer to continue with just one camera. Are Canon DSLRs so
unreliable?

All DSLRs are so unreliable. Depending on antiquated mechanical mirror
flapping and focal-plane shutter contraptions will do that.

As a Nikon DSLR user, I am loath to give credit to a G10 + Gigapan for
this project:

The Obama gigapan has 1.474 Gpix from 220 images (2616 shots). The
Paris one has 26Gpix from 2346 shots.
G10 focal equivalent of 28-140mm. For the panorama in Paris 600mm
(300mm x 2) was used and it shows.
And G10 has less pixels than a 5D II.
So, it is possible to use some P&S but the result will not come close.
And they have waited 16 months for that project.
G10 has a decent IQ because its zoom range is limited.
