What is the difference between this and slaughtering beef cattle or
pigs? I suppose it is that we don't have cows and pigs for pets.

Are you a vegetarian?
If not who kills your meat?

Dogs routinely show loyalty and affection. Chickens, Pigs and Cattle do not. They are unable to do so.

Would life form X be better seen as a companion, or as a meal?

Chicken_____
Cow_____
Pig_____
Dog_____
Cat_____
Human_____
Corn_____
Bok Choy____

Now add the word 'baby' in front of each and try again.

Don't know about chickens, but that certainly isn't true of pigs and
cattle. I suspect you don't know much.

Horses have been left out. A large source of food world wide, and a
specie that can feign affection and smarts, too.
