I've just received my new Photosmart S20 scanner which has arrived with NO
HP software CDROM. I've called HP who have advised it will take 5-10 days to
send me a CDROM!!

Could someone please send me a copy of the required software (or point me to
a server) to get my scanner working so I can play with my new toy please!

Thanks

Alan

PS. All i can find at HP's site is an update patch which requires a copy of
the software to update.

Take it back and exchange it for a new unit. You shouldn't have wait
on HP customer support for that sort of problem. The PhotoSmart S20
install CD is 125 megs of program.

Good Luck,

Hi Alan,
I've had the HP S20 for several months and I can appreciate your excitement.
However the original install disk is 247Megs big. If you cut out the
Japanese portion you reduce it by 115Meg. My guess is that the vital
portions are about 40-60 Meg. That would be one serious mailbox on your side
let alone my patience to squeek it up through a 33k twisted pair. My
suggestion is (if any way possible) wait for the disk. If by chance you
bought it locally, you probably could get the store to help you. Just tell
them you are returning it because it is not complete. You might find someone
to burn you a copy so they don't have a return. Depends who and where. The
other point is to make absolutly sure which model # you have. Mine is the
C5101A with USB. Although you won't find anyone at HP admit it, the C5100
scuzzie port model has also been refered to as the S20. I beleive the SE
patch and upgrades are different. They are listed in 2 different locations
on HP's site. It's quite confusing. I was on the phone with them and I had
to redirect them to the right location for the C5101a. At that point I'm
sure it was a RED faced rep said "we'll get this straightened out". All in
all I'm very happy with the results and I'm sure you won't regret the wait.
It's to bad that in this world of a zillion parts to make a beautiful
machine, some bozzo can't see to it that a giant (5" round) piece of plastic
gets put into the box. Good luck and happy future scanning, I think you'll
like the results.

Thanks for your responses - I guess I was hoping
that the core software i needed was only a few
megs of data.

As I received scanner form a mail order house
I'll wait for the software ffrom HP rather than
return scanner itself.

Thanks again

Alan

There may be a pattern here of bad HP quality control in their packing
function. My s20 arrived with no calibration card or small-object
scan pouch, and no pocket in the manual if they had been there..
They sent me each item separately FedEx.
Then they sent me the manual with the pocket, pouch and calibration
card in another package.
Hmmm.

Possibly. Or we might be seeing returned merchandise being re-sold
to unsuspecting customers.

More likely that HP had a bad supplier. I got one of the manuals
without the cal card too. The pocket was missing in the back where
the items should have been. Obviously a mistake on the part of the
producers of the manuals, which likely was not HP.

I had noted that the pocket, calibration card and transparent small
object holder were missing from my HP s20 manual. HP sent me the
replacement stuff in an awkaward but speedy manner. There was no sign
of removal of the pocket in the original manual, no adhesive scar..
The replacement manual had the pocket firmly glued and the full
contents.
The scanner and software installed easily, scans are good,IMHO. I did
buy Vueprint/Vuescan because I have a lot of negative strips to scan.
I bought the scanner from buy.com and have no complaints save if I
had known how fast they would get it out to me, I would have opted for
surface delivery and saved $25.

I am sorry, I have unrelated to this tread question, but I will ask it
anyway.
Who has experience with both HP scanner and Kodak scanner? So far I take
negatives to the lab and get a CD with 18 Mgb file for each frame. This
corresponds to 256 dpi for 12 By 8 print. This resolution on my Epson
700 is practically enough. But how HP can be compared to Kodak? Should I
buy HP ($500) or continue to use a lab for $1.60 per 18 Mgb file? I am
spending about $20.0 per month for Kodak GD files.

Don't be so quick to "pass" on HP's S20 scanning software. You'll walk a
long mile to best its sharpening ability/quality (40-60%). It also loads
16bit into PhotoShop. Yes I have tried the other. The other is good, I just
prefer the picture from HP.
