My Nikon Coolpix 5000 LCD monitor suddenly does not work anymore. I
turned my camera on the other days and as usual, opened up the swivel
LCD monitor, expecting to see the shooting objects on the LCD display.
Well, it was all black! I pushed the monitor icon a number of times
but still couldn't get the display back. I tried resetting the user
settings but with no luck. I thought the LCD monitor is broken or the
cable/connection to the swivel joint was broken, so I used the view
finder to shoot the image. However it didn't work. The red "flash"
light on, even it was shooting in daylight and the green "AF" light
blinked. The pictures came out all black!? Anyone has experienced
about this? The strange thing was this all happened a week ago, since
then I was trying to figure out what's going on, reading all the
manuals and newsgroups. 2 days ago, all of sudden, the display came
back. I shot couple of pictures, downloaded them. I tried it again
later, the LCD monitor goes black again. What's going on?!? I had
this camera 6 months ago and never had this problem before. Any
pointer is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Victor Tso
Sounds like a mechanical/electrical problem with the CCD/associated
circuitry, or something blocking the view.
If it is, as you say only 6 months old, I'd strongly advise returning
it for service.

First, try to reset the camera, leave the battery out for a while, or
search the internet/manual for how to "reset" it.
That might work, to clear any bad information.

Things a surgeon should never say:
Better save that for the autopsy.
My guess would be, the shutter in front of the CCD is sticking. I would
send it in for a service ASAP.
