Great day outdoors. Nikon D70 with Nikor zoom macro, Sigma ring lens, Canon
G9 compact and decent tripod. One of those days when I felt that I had
chosen (almost) the right gear. D70 was great with the 105mm lens, it was
too heavy though when combined with the ring flash and attached to the
tripod. Think I'll leave the D70 macro photgraphy for summer time when
spending long miniutes on my knees in the mud in cold weathe won't be an
issue.Thats when the G9 came in useful, light and very quick to use,
especially convenient as I had to keep on the move due to the cold. Quality
of images? D70 was perfect, except that I always have to contend with the
permanent stains on the sensor, which have to removed afterwards. G9 was
amazingly convenient and fast, image quality pretty good, managed to take a
couple of photos that I would not otherwises have managed (wish Canon had
not deprived the G9 its remote shutter release though!). Great day. Decent
SLR plus decent compact - well pleased with it :-)

So why the mention of the D80 in the title?

An error, I also have a D80, but the D70 got horribly smashed when I
dropped it and is now held together with sticky tape and superglue, I only
use the D70 when I go out mountaineering or am on my mountain bike or
otherwise doing something risky. Its a heavy camera but I don't want to
trash the new D80.

By the way, in my earlier post, i should have stressed that I used the G9
to take close up shots because of the problems at that time with using the
D70 plus macro plus flash. The results with the G9 doing close up work was
somewhat better than I expected.

Which camera do you like better, the D70 or the D80?

The D80 is a lot lighter and does'nt feel like a brick! RecentlyI have
started to shoot in RAW and the D80 allows each shot to be in RAW and JPEG
simultaneously, so afterwards I just edit my RAW file and if its better than
the cameras jpeg then I am reallly happy, if its worse then I have the
default jpeg. On the D70 its either RAW or jpeg. Otherwise I can't say
that I noticed any difference, the higher resolution of the D80 does'nt make
any difference to be honest, I think all this businessof increasingly higher
resolution is a bit pointless.

I have a D80 and like it fairly well and I do the same as you, shoot in
jpeg and raw. It's a lot easier than shooting in just raw and having to
convert all the photos.

About the higher and higher number of megapixels, I agree with you, it
just makes you have to have more and more storage without any real
benefit as an amateur. Blowing up a photo to 16" by 20" is large enough
for me.

I've been thinking lately that it could be another 3 years before something
turns up thats better for me than the D80, and given that the D80 is coming
down in price its tempting to buy a second one. I have a number of lens and
I want to avoid changing them too often when I'm out in the countryside as I
eventually accumulate all sorts of rubbish on the sensor. the D80 is just
light enough to consider having two of them attached to two lens in my
rucksack!

Your D70 can save an NEF and JPG simultaneously too.

John

Yes, but the jpeg resolution is low.

I don't like to change lenses either. Since I now have three digital
cameras and 4 lenses, I have my macro on one camera, an 18-200VR on my
D80 and the new 24-70 on my D300. I have another telephoto lens that I
am not using at present. The D300 has a sensor cleaning action built in
the vibrates the sensor to keep dust off, I don't know how this works
because I haven't changed the lens. When I go on vacation I take my D80
and my D300.
