Just bought my Epson 780. I printed several photos, but noticed that
there are dotted lines from left to right across my photos. Wondering
if it is normal, or I’ve got a defective printer. I’m using HP glossy
6x4 photo paper. Please advise.

HP paper doesn't work well with Epson printers.

How is the printer connected to your PC?

I had the same thing with my 1290 when it was connected via a USB hub.
Connected it straight to the M/board Problem solved.

When you say the dotted lines run across the paper, do you mean left to
right across a 6 x 4 photo printed in landscape orientation? And are these
dots indentations in the surface? If so, you have the well known "pizza
wheel" problem, which is very common.

Good thought. And using HP and some other papers, the ink doesn't dry
quickly enough, so the tracks could be very noticeable.

I get pizza wheel lines on my 780 if I forget to set the paper
thickness to "+" when using photo paper. I keep it set to "0" for
regular 20lb Inkjet paper.

Yes. It's left to right across 6x4 in landscape mode. I guess it's
the known "pizza wheel" problem.

Any ways to avoid the problem? Paper Thickness? What paper
to recommend? Will the problem also apply to other printers
(such as Canon S800?)?

Thanks for all your replies.

Use Epson papers for best results. Premium Glossy Photo, Matte heavy weight
and Semigloss all work quite well. Remember to sleeve your photos in archival
non-acid sleeving after printing or frame under glass. Preferably UV filtered. Do
not display in direct sunlight for extended periods. These are the limitations of
the (inkjet) format.

A search on Google with "epson printer pizza wheel" brings up many
references. E.g:
http://skyscraper.fortunecity.com/skully/129/features/pizza/pizza1.html
The problem is likely to be less visible on lustre surfaces like Olmec
satin. I recently printed out a photo on a number of different papers for
comparison. This was on a 1290. On going back and checking, only two
showed pizza wheel tracks and both were Agfa glossy.

I get the pizza wheel effect with my S800.... although, i cant
remember if i've checked for the effect when using the photo paper
pro. but it was certainly present when i used cheap generic paper.
