To read >>>> directly <<<< from the microdrive you would need a CF to IDE
adaptor. PC Engines has them for about $20 (USD) . This would make the drive,
or CF card, visible in file explorer.

Not true. I had one (PNY) that would not read my microdrives, even
though it had a Type II slot and a drive would plug in. It was able
to read my 16M CF card that came with the camera, just not the
microdrives.
I use a Microtech Cameramate SnapSHOT CF reader ($19.95 - CompUSA and
elsewhere) to read my microdrives. Has worked so far in Win2K without
a hitch.

I have to attempt to open my CF files with the card not inserted. The error
message will appear and I will then push the CF in and hit 'retry', . . . this
works everytime.
If I attempt to access my CF files with the card in the drive, the reader will
drop off my list of computer drives and I have to reboot.
It may be a power distribution problem, . . . or a glitch. Norton does not
reveal any problems.
I use it all the time and it works great. Look at

Just about any USB card reader will be seen by Windows Explorer as a
removable drive, whether the reader has CF, SM, MS or any of the other
flash cards in it. That includes microdrives (even though they aren't
flash RAM cards). As long as the reader will read CF type II cards, it
will (usually( read microdrives the same way.

Most current models that read type II cards will probably work. I use an
SIIG JU-CF1012 I picked up for less than $20:
http://www.siig.com/products/usb/usb_CFCardReader.html
It also comes with a USB extension cable and USB driver software on a CD
for PCs that don't have USB support installed.
You can by one on-line for less than $16:

I've got perhaps four other card readers, and there are fancier card
readers and readers that handle multiple card types, but I like this one
because it just plugs into the USB port on the front of my PC. I've used
it with a 1 gig microdrive, quarter gig Mr Flash cards and misc. smaller
compact flash cards I use.
My PC is a Sony VAIO with Windows ME. The USB port software already in
the PC works fine with the device. To use, I plug the CF card into the
device and plug the device into the USB port. (No need to shutdown the PC
to do this.) The device with the CF card appears to Windows Explorer as a
drive with the photos as files. I also use it to record CF cards to use
with my NEX II MP3 player.

Not positive about that. I'd make sure it SAYS it will do MD.

Funny, I plug my ImageMate into the USB port, and Explorer sees it as a
removable drive. No CF to IDE 'adapter' needed.
