I'm looking for a digital picture frame.
Basically just a LCD with VGA resolution and a CompactFlash slot. Plug in
the CF card and the pictures are being displayed as a slide show. Ideally it
should run on batteries and 110+220V AC.

I don't need and actually I don't want any of those "online" frames where
you have to connect to a companies website or to dial-in to activate it
(like e.g. the frame from CEIVA). Those are useless for my mom on the other
side of the Atlantic.

A simple, straight-forward LCD reading the pictures from a CF card, that's
all I want.
Does anybody have a pointer?

Buy a very old cheap laptop. The slower the better because it will be
cheaper. More storage than you'll ever need, you can easily program it to
go through your pictures, and you 'll use something that would otherwise end
up in the landfill.

Good idea for you and me (if you don't mind having an ugly laptop sitting on
your mantle).
But my mom doesn't even know how to replace the batteries in a wall clock.
Do you think she would be happy with an old laptop?

With the proper items in the Startup folder, all she needs to know is
how to turn it on and select the album of interest.

This does assume that the person setting up the laptop has some
knowledge of Windows.
