I like the idea of bringing up just the right buttons /icons according to
the intended task Tool bars specielly for quality adjustments.
In 9 cases out'a 10 it is _quality _enhancement_/alterations_ I'm doing.
1) Cut and rotate 2) clean noise and moire 3) correct light parameters
4) correct color parameters 5) sharpen 6) blur and soften 7) do 1-7
in specified areas (redeye elimination) 8) zoom + /-
...and 1-7 whith a descent (close to pro) level of precision.
The PhotoDelux 1.0 has a very functional interface but is just a too
primitive in its adjustments alternatives.
Does it exist an improved Adobe PhotoDelux after v.1 or is there anything
better?
Perhaps a few more quality alteration filters (which?) for IrfanView is the
solution?
For more artistic image alterations there are lots of suitable paint /artist
programs (gimp, pixia, vicman).

Consider Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro 8, both do excellent work in enhancing.
Personally I use PSP 8 as it is far cheaper than Photoshop and gives the
same quality enhancement results. It has a one button fix that I call the
magic button (although it is not perfect for all images) and all the
functions you are looking for plus more. You can also set up your work area
exactly how you want with the buttons you only want displayed and swap
easily between different work areas.
You can download a 30 day fully functional trial from
http://www.digitalworkshop.com/index.shtml . It's a large download and be
sure to download version 8.1. The boxed version comes with many more
brushes, tubes, swatches etc. (not included in download to save space, but,
downloadable separately) and also includes Animation Shop.

If you want real time preview, the whole screen not a sample, PSP8 is
sloooooooooow. It's so slow, they pop a progress bar windows onto the
screen to let you know it's not hung : (
I even got the PSP people to admit it:
"Hi Don,
Paint Shop Pro 8.0 and 8.01 are slow. Improvements were made to version 8.1.
If you have an earlier version, you might want to update to version 8.1. You
should see some speed improvements."
Sigh..... I already had 8.1 running. BTW, I have an AMD XP 2600+ and 1 gig
of RAM. I also told them I missed the "Duplicate Copy" function; they didn't
offer a solution. But I must say they were polite and responsive. I just
wish there SW performed better.
PhotoShop Elements 2 is a far better solution unless you feel like shelling
out $600 to $700 fro the
full version. Real time preview is immediate. And there are hundreds if not
thousands of plugins available for Elements many free or cheap.
I'm pulling for PSP because I think Adobe needs some competition but until I
find it, I'm stuck.
Just my 2 cents.
There was a Photo Deluxe 4 but I believe it has been discontinued by Adobe.
Check out Photoshop Elements 2,
PaintShopPro, Uleads Photo Impact, Picture it, etc.

I find your answer informative.
My prime question was if there are any software like Adobe PhotoDelux1 (not
a paint program), that are small and mainly _aimed _towards _filtering_ and
perhaps faster to work whith in such applications.
...that makes the interface smothe just for photo enhancement.

I have fiddled quite a deal whith paint and draw programs since I first sat
together with a Mac in -87
My first digicam hasn't arrived yet... traveling in a cardboard box right
now. Despite of that I have done enough picture enhancement
(http://www.pbase.com/) to realise that artist and painting software as a
rule are slow to work whith beacause of menue trees etc.
Just as you say Tony! Perhaps the soft wonder would be a graphic app. where
the interface (shown toolbars) could be direct shifted whith 2 - 4 icons.
# sice & crops
# filter mode
# enhance pictures
# create
I think that program could look something like Adobe PhotoDeluxe... but I
guess most people shops for features /$ instead of getting the most suitable
software.
Free and interesting picture manipulations
Some hang ups in my Duron700 /win98se-system but works.

Lots of filters for manipulating quality here. Adaptive filters, Fourier
etc. Stable.

Havn't tried this one yet.
