I am about to reprint my portfolio. I wanted to originally
print on Portriga-rapid 118 until I found out that the paper
has been discontinued. I then looked into the new Agfa
variable contrast paper which I have been told has a warm
tone if developed in Agfa developer W1 (?). I'm not looking
for real warm paper but just something similar to what I was
getting with the Portriga. If any one has any suggestions or
experience with getting subtle warm tones in development
without an additional toning procedure please let me know.
My paper of choice when printing jobs is Ilford VC and would
love to be able to get a warm tone from that paper.
Any Ideas out there? Thanks - Charles

Charles, the new Agfa paper is called multicontrast classic. It is a
double weight fiber paper. When developed in Agfa NuetolWA, it produces
a subtle warm tone. When developed in Agfa NuetolNA it is supposed to
be a neutral tone. I have used the warm tone developer and love the
results when compared side by side to Ilford Multigrade FB & Seagull
SelectVC Fiber.

I used Portriga 118 for hand coloring--what kind of a "tooth" does this
new paper have. Has anyone used it for hand color????
Would appreciate any info. Thanks!

Had the same problem, except I had no idea that the paper was
discontinued. I kept calling suppliers only to be told that the paper was
out of stock and would be coming. Finally someone suggested that I call
Agfa, who told me that they were not making it any more. They have a
great group of customer service reps, one of whom suggested that I try
their Multicontrast Classic, developing it in Neutrol WA (for warm tone).
He was nice enough to send me a free package to try. I been working with
it for several weeks now and found the paper gorgeous. Developed in
Neutrol WA it's as warm as Portriga with slightly crisper whites. Having
used graded paper for a long time, it's been nice to have the freedom of
multicontrast--the investment is a lot less, too. Give it a try. I
believe if you liked Portriga, you'll like this as well or better.

I've been told that 111 will still be made in Grades 2 and 3, but 118 is
gone forever. You can still find some around though, if you hurry up.

Is it both surfaces of Portriga Rapid that have been discontinued or

Just recently I finished construction on my new darkroom :-) and did some
paper testing on Ilford MG, Kodak Polycontrast (I think that was the name,
the fiber base multicontrast Kodak paper...), Forte Elegance, and the AGFA
Multicontrast Classic. The paper developer was Dektol, and I used have a
dichroic head on my enlarger. I was really impressed with the AGFA
Multicontrast Classic. It had the highest DMAX, it had comparable DMIN,
and, best of all, with a 150M filtration, it was very snappy (the average
gradient was the highest of all the papers tested, and the response was
very linear.)

So, my tests have shown that it is a great with a cold tone developer like
Dektol, and you have shown it to be a great paper with a warm tone developer!
I can hardly wait to do the warm tone tests... it could be love! Imagine...
only having to stock *one* type of paper...

By the way, the Forte didn't do very well at all with yellow filtratrion,
went rather non-linear...
