About 25 years ago I purchased darkroom equipment and many chemicals from a
studio that was going out of business. Among the chemicals was a can of GAF
Vividol paper and film developer. It has been sitting on my darkroom shelf
since that time. Just out of curiosity I plan on mixing it up and giving it
a try. Even though it is in a can, I think there is still the possibility of
oxidation after 25+ years. If not, what can I expect from this stuff ?
I ran a search on Google and nothing turned up for it. The can states that
it contains hydroquinone, metol and mild akalai. Are there any photographers
out there that have worked with this stuff in the past ?If so I would be
interested in some info on this so I know what I am playing with. Thanks
much, R.M.

Actually, I remember using this developer as one of my very first
developers about 40 years ago. It came packed in a kit of home
darkroom supplied that contained a very small 35 mm enlarger, trays,
etc. I think the enlarger made 3 1/2 by 5 prints, and also came with
a Yankee tank. The developer worked, but that's about all I can
remember about it. I still have the negs somewhere.

Vividol was Ansco's equivalent to Kodak Dektol. It was probably
identical to Ansco-Agfa 125. Ansco 125 and Kodak D-72 (Dektol) differ
by literally fractions of a gram of ingredients.
The "mild alkali" is sodium carbonate.
I don't know when Vividol was last sold but it must have been over
thirty years ago. There is a chance the stuff is still good but it is
no different than Dektol so you might want to keep the can intact as a
collector's item.
