Hi all
As a newcomer to the dark arts of the darkroom (I'm doing a City & Guilds
course which has introduced me to B&W developing and printing) I am setting
up a small darkroom in my study.
I have been offered a Phillips PCS 2000 enlarger in full working order along
with loads of other darkroom equipment and consumables. The asking price is
£70.
My questions are, is this a good enlarger? is it suitable for a beginner
like myself? and what, if any, are the downsides of this enlarger.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Regards
Steve Loveridge

I have found some UK sites with the lamp in their catologue. The lamp is
Phillips 13165 and I have been told they are readily available.

This is a fine enlarger and the price makes it a great bargain.

some guys in our photoclub use this enlarger.

it was quite famouse that days
the benefits working with a color enlarger are that no dust problems on
filters will appear.
these days the enlarger can be bought for little money because lot's of
people start to dismantle their darkroom. So try to get it as cheap as
possible and look for a good lens such as a componen-s.

To give you an idea what they ask for it in The Netherlands:
prices mostly depend on the lens

PHILIPS PCS 2000 color and b/w enlarger
condensors from 35mm until 6x6
trafo + timer
EL NIKKOR 4,0 f 50 mm lens

250 euro.

Hi Steve,

I have had a PCS 2000 for about 15 years. My advice is to grab it quick before
anyone else comes along; assuming of course that it really is in good condition.

My experience in using it for 35mm and 6x6 has been nothing but good. It is
especially good at keeping out dust. It is very quiet - no fan.

If you plan to do both 35mm and medium format, be sure it has both diffusion
boxes. They are clearly marked as 35mm and 6x6.

Bulbs are no problem. In fact I have three spares and have never had to replace
one. (But I have been using a D5XL for 6x6 and 4x5 the last two years; so less
wear and tear on the Phillips)

Do you know how many inserts are included for the negative carrier? I have four
sets including 35mm, 4.5x6 and 6x6. Be sure the enlarger has the one(s) you
need - they could be really hard to find.

If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail them directly.

Good luck

John

I think that they're great enlargers as well. I have two of them. As a
novice color printer (most of my work is with 4x5 bw), the Philips system is
very easy to use. As long as it has the accessories that you want, go for
it.

Hey Stomper, did you get this enlarger? I have one and am wondering what to ask for it. I bought it years ago before the digital revolution and never used it. It's been in storage all this time. Any suggestions on what to ask? Kevin Herrin

Er...the message you are replying to is over 14 years old. I'm
not sure the poster is still checking the group, but maybe!
