I'd like to get some experiences from people who have used Meopta enlargers.
I am thinking of buying one from Freestyle Sales in Los Angeles. I'd be
grateful for information about the following:

1. The Opemus 6: what do you think of the build quality? I am going to be
printing mainly 6X6 but I have a very few 6X7's from when I used that
format. Is the opening big enough to print a 6x7, even if I have to
jerry-rig a carrier.

2. What is the quality of the color heads? Do you find that they provide
edge-to-edge coverage of the negative?

3. If anyone has used the Magnifax enlargers, I'm looking for similar
feedback on those.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Stuart:

I had very good experience with the meopta enlargers. The Opemus 6 is a
6x6 enlarger. Although I never tried it, I don't think you could do 6x7
with it - it's simply isn't made for that.
I used one for several years before going to large format, and was very
pleased with it. I don't know much about their color heads.
Other than that - a very strong, sturdy enlarger. It's build it the
czech republic and what it lacks in finesse it makes up in very heavy
metal consturction - everything is about 50% heavier than on (for
example) a LPL enlarger.
I think much less of the Meopta optics though - not-so-excellent lenses.

In short - good mechanics, fair optics, excellent value

I only used them in school. There, they were in great conditions,
although the reckless use of students...
If used with minimum care, they should last a life.

Hello !
I use, since a long time, an Opemus 6. with a color head (a meopta color
3 with the 12v 100w dichroic bulb.
I mainly print 35 B&W negs, and sometimes 120 (6x6 B&W negs) This
enlarger was once borrowed by a friend to print Ilfochrome and was rated
"good"....
To print I use a Nikkor 50/2.8 EL and an Anaret 80/4.5 lenses.
I think that the 6X6 coverage is not perfect, because the negs where
made using a Yashica MAT 124, so the shutter cause a slight vigneting,
the anaret lens is not reputed to offer the better coverage, and the
light head is suffering from a slight light fall off. So my comments
about the whole stuff, must be taken accordingly..... ;)
I really _do like_ this kind of stuff, because it is really well done,
sturdy, and offer all what you will ask for !
Now they offer a long cable to function as a "remote" focussing knob !
My advice is to ensure that you buy the "de luxe" version : the one with
metal neg carrier, with the full neg and lens stage movements. They
build some cheappo versions with "fixed screws" instead of knobs,
plastics neg carrier..... Beware.

My advice will be to buy the Magnifax, as the coverage will be better
for 6x6 as the magnifax covers 6x9. And it is really big !

The other option will be to buy an Opemus 7 which will cover 6x7, I
think...

For the lenses, the Meogon S 50/2.8 is one of the best lens in the
world. And it began to be know. As far as I know, I was unable to buy
one, the guy in the shop was unable to get one ! They never deliver
him.... Maybe in the US ..... All test I've read so far have stated that
the 80 mm range was not so good, and where average + optics. But prices
are _very_ low, and even lower if you got to the Czech republic and
import yourself the whole stuff.

Hope this helps !
