Use the same toners for RC as used for fiber base. For image
protection Kodak GP-1, Gold Protective Solution works although its not
as effective as a sulfiding toner. For more of a color change use a
Gold Blue toner like the old Ansco/Agfa 231.
GP-1 will slightly cool the image color of neutral papers. Ansco 231
will give a more definite blue color along with some intensification.
The color change produced by Gold toners depends on the original image
color. Neutral or cold toned paper will become somewhat cooler in tone
and somewhat intensified, without a definite color change. Warm tone
papers will become slate blue, the blue color becoming more vivid as
the oringinal image tone is warmer. Gold toner never gives the
brilliant blue of Iron toner but its very permanent and Iron toner
images are not as stable as untreated silver.
RC prints to be toned in Gold should be treated in a sulfite wash aid
and washed.
Kodak Gold Protective Solution GP-1
Water 750.0 ml
Gold Chloride, (1% stock solution) 10.0 ml
Sodium thiocyanate 10.0 grams
Water to make 1.0 liter
The gold stock solution is made by adding the contents of a 1.0 ml
vial of Gold Chloride to 100 ml of water.
Add the Gold Chloride stock to the water as indicated.
Dissolve the Sodium Thiocyanate separately in 125.0 ml of of water.
Then add the thiocyanate solution slowly to the gold chloride while
stirring constantly.
Prints should be treated for about ten minutes, or until a slight
change in image tone is detected. They should then be washed for ten
minutes (fiber paper). RC prints will wash out in four minutes.
The capacity is approximately thiry 8x10 prints per gallon. GP-1 has
poor keeping qualities and should be mixed just before use.
Agfa/Ansco 231 Gold Toner
Water, at 125°F 750.0 ml
Ammonium thiocyanate 105.0 grams
or
Sodium thiocyanate 110.0 grams
or
Potassium thiocyanate 135.0 grams
Gold Chloride, 1% solution (see above) 60.0 ml
Cold water to make 1.0 liter
Toning takes 15 to 45 minutes at room temperature.
When used on a print which has been previously sepia toned (with a
sulfiding toner) the toner will produce bright red tones.
Prints should be well washed before and after toning.
