He was the last of Edward Weston's sons. I took one of his workshops a
couple of years ago. He was an interesting speaker, very knowledgable and
eager to talk about his work and his fathers. He showed us a lot of prints
and looked at ours. He printed one of Edward's negatives of Charis on the
Dunes at Oceano. We took a tour of Point Lobos where Cole pointed out many
of the rocks and trees that Edward photographed. Later we sat on the rocks
at Weston Beach and Cole answered our questions about photography, Edward,
Brett, Charis, and printing Edward's negatives. It was a great workshop. I
feel like it's the end of an era.
Gina Weston graciously sent an email to a number of folks noting the
passing of Cole, her father-in-law. It includes a link to the

provides a thumbnail of the life of a man who lived it to the 'max'.
It is amazing to consider that he concentrated on the legacy of Edward
Weston until a time when most people would want to retire...then he
plunged into his own work with zest and perspective of life
experience. His color work is superb. His contributions will not be

Cole Weston, who was part of a dynasty of internationally known
California photographers, died Sunday at Community Hospital of the
Monterey Peninsula. He was 84.
