Hi everyone. I just wanted to thank you all for the responses to my post
about my ferret not using his water bottle. I think I'll look into using
a water trough designed for birds and then go to the water dish if that
doesn't work. I will definitely anchor it because my ferret enjoys
pushing his food dish around sometime and I KNOW a water dish would prove
much more entertaining :)

Next question: My ferret is now almost 12 weeks old and I've been trying to
introduce him to various "snacks" that I was told he would like. I've tried
bananas, spaghetti, bagels, potatos and a few other things here and there, but
he has no interest in any of them. All he likes is his food and his linatone.
Should I worry or just let him have his bland food all the time... I figure
he should have something else, just for an occaisional treat for being good...

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tom,
I have two ferrets and one will eat anything you give him because
he thinks that it must be good because you gave it to him despite the fact
his body will shake in revultion of the taste. Our other ferret won't
touch anything human to eat except raisins, but that's a long time ago
now. Idefix had a bad experience eating pizza that dropped on the floor
once. (He was up all night barfing.) and since then he won't go near
anything human, except milk. I think it all goes down to the taste buds of
the ferret.

You're welcome. ;) I've found that peanut butter makes a wonderful treat
for my Scamp. He'll stand up and beg for it. If your wiener-rat doesn't
seem intersted in anything, just keep trying other things occasionally.
It's possible the little critter is perfectly content with a diet of
the standard ferret fare and linatone.

I wouldn't worry about it. My ferret, Sarah, never ate anything but her food (only Iams-
she turns her nose up at everything else) and ferretone until one day we got pizza and
found that she was wild for pizza crust. She'll lick french fries, but I think that's for the
salt. She's always been healthy, so I figure she knows best. Good luck.

Two things

first : A study was announced on THe ferret mailing liost that basically
condemmed wood chips (cedar especially) because it seems that they emit a
carcinogenic gas. It should be OK for hamsters or guinea pigs that have
short life spansd anyway but any thing that lives over a few years should
probably not be left with chips. THis is good and bad. Somehow it may
save trees, we've switched to towels and recycled newspaper, but I have
noticed that many pet stores use chips for any animals including Puppies
in display cases etc.

Second : If your ferret seems uninterested in treats don't worry. What
a ferret doesn't like one day, you will find under you're bed the next
day !

Peanut butter's OK for ferrets, just be absolutely sure NOT to give them
the chunky style. Ferrets cannot digest peanuts and if they get even a
little piece from the chunky style PB they could end up with a blockage.
Smooth is the ONLY way to go!
Also--our ferrets like raisins (no more than 1 or 2 a day), or bananas,
but not much else. We also use ferretone for a treat. Mostly they think
we're trying to poison them : ). Friends of our have ferrets that eat
EVERYTHING! Lettuce, spaghetti, carrots, pizza, you name it. They
especially like oatmeal. The key to treats is moderation.

I wouldn't force any foods on him, but I'd be surprised if there aren't
other things he would like... Both of mine enjoy green pepper and cereal
with milk (especially honey nut cheerios)... They don't usually have any
interest in meat (although I know of some that do). Mine will
occasionally eat banana, but not usually. They like ice cream (but give
him very little... chocolate is very bad for animals, but a couple of
licks won't hurt.... too much dairy products can be bad as well). The
best thing I can say is to keep on trying... Whenever you have something
you think he might like, offer it to him. However I'm sure he'll be
happy without them as well... Both of my ferrets know exactly where we
keep the green pepper and will run to the refrigerator whenever someone
goes even remotely close to it...

Good luck,

Gregg

Oakey and Mojo will come running from around the house when they
hear the rustling of a Twizzler bag (strawberry). They'll beg for
them and "sit" to get the Twizzler. However, Oakey will promptly
reject any piece that is not small enough for his liking. Take it
easy on the amount though, too much will lead to "Twizzler doodles".
They also like peanut butter and Mojo likes turkey in with the regular
food. Keep trying!

Mine go nuts for soft and hard cat treats. You may have to break
them up for them to take them, mine won't touch them if they're big pieces.

I had a ferret once that was in total ecstasy when she ate refried beans.
One of my ferrets now goes gaga over beer - she'll lick it right off my
lips, I have to fight her off so she doesn't get loopy.

Mine love cat treats called 'Pounce'. I havn't tried seafood flavour but
they luv chicken and beef. In fact they try to steal the treats almost as much
as they try to steal the ferretone bottle. Best of all, these treats are cheap,
and pretty much like food so I don't have to spaz when I see they've managed to
get to them.

PS. I hear lot's of ferrets love raisins.

My ferret Nikkei likes pizza crust too, but more to play with than to eat.
The only other treats I've gotten him to take are ferretone and cheerios.

Mine LOVE Pounce too! Not the seafood one tho. Never did take towards
fishy stuff. The little buggers learned how to take the lid off though
one day. I usually kept it in their travel bag side compartment. They
learned to unzip it and pry the lid off. They were pooping white poop
for days! Mom's learned the power of height...certain heights are
definately unattainable for them. ;-)

The youngest of my 2 ferrets will only drink her water after first
splashing it on the floor with her feet. On the other hand, my oldest
will only eat his food off the floor...Combined they make thier living
area a mess!!

Just keep trying to find things that he might like. Ferret diet is
designed to NOT require external supplements so you should not be
concerned. My oldest will only eat his food, any type of cracker and
anything with a 95% sugar content...:) My youngest will eat anything
except those 95% sugar content foods.. She can be a real pest every ngiht
trying to climb into my dinner.....:)

Don;t worry, I'm sure you'll eventually find something he likes!!
