Hi everyone,
I'm posting this on behalf of my roommate who is looking for a 5 ft.
long red rat snake so that he can crossbreed it with a black female
obsoletta.obsoletta.
He is willing to spend up to $35 bucks for one.
Can anyone tell me where to go to run one down for him?
Thanks
John Jimenez

I wanted to set the record straight on a few things. First, where I
come from Corn snakes are called just that corn snakes. We do have them in
West Virginia, in the southern and eastern part of the state.
I know that they are called several different names depending upon
locale but I was under the impression that was from back when they were
classified as obsoletta. I've been out of the loop for almost 7 years and
wanted to get back into it. I know about kings and corns not rats. Thus when
a friend of mine got a hold of a female black rat snake that he wanted to
crossbreed with maybe a red rat snake I didn't know enough to tell him. a)
there are no such things as red rat snakes in the obsoletta family, b) this
is a name that is also applied to elaphe.gutatta.gutatta or common corn
snakes..
Like I said I haven't been involved in herping for almost 7 years.
Another thing that was new to me was the turnaround in the herping industry
as far as Xbreeding is concerned. I wasn't aware of the large numbers of
inbred snakes that are popping up all over the place. I appreciate now why
no one answered my post.
From what I remember crossbreeding was the same as breeding als, or
mels or any other attractive color phases. Just as long as you didn't let
them go or didn't lie about the pheno and geno it was fine. **sigh* but
things change.
I just wanted to explain my post better.
