We rescued a Bearded Dragon today from Animal Control, found loose in
a neighborhood. He's about a foot long, docile. I have a cage
previously used for Iguana's that I set him up in. It is built like a
birdcage with mesh all around. Have a heat lamp set-up so he is warm.

The problem is when we had the heat lamp up high, and set him on a
branch, or basking spot, he would move and eventually fall to the
floor of the cage. This happened twice, so we set the heat lamp down
towards the bottom where he could get warm on the floor and be safe.
He is a fat little thing, well fed and taken care of. Anyone have any
advice on his falling?

Also, he turns a darker color when he starts to warm up. Looks cool,
but is it normal? Thanks.

What is the basking area temperatures? your beardie might be falling
because it is too hot and is thermoregulating but trying to get away from
the main hot spot. You basking area should be 100-110F (not higher then
110). If its any hotter, that would be why you beardie doesn't want it. I
keep my basking area around 100 to 105F.

Darker colors absorb more heat, What the HELL are you doing rescueing
herps. You are obviously lacking in VERY BASIC herp information, and you
are lucky that poor BD didn't BREAK A LEG.

PLEASE, go to the library and learn what you NEED TO KNOW.

Uh, bearded dragons are not arboreal. In other words, they do not climb
trees. They live on the GROUND. Hope he didn't break a leg.
Generally when I need information about an animal before I buy it, I
first do a search on Dogpile, my favorite search engine, and learn what I
need to know before I bring it home. Makes it a lot less stressful for the
animal.

with all respect to pete's credentials, please tell us a little more about
the setup, particular the size of the branches. they definitely aren't
great climbers, but if the bd is falling off a straight and wide (about the
same girth as the bd) branch, then its possible that there is some sort of
neurological damage (or something else). if this is the case, then maybe a
vet could help the guy out, but otherwise, the bd should do fine on a flat
surface with maybe a rock or something to climb on. just make sure you
provide a good temperature gradient and if you choose to add a climbing
surface, put it in the hot side.

There might be neurological damage, but the BD was cold, which provided
the motive to put the BD on a "basking site", a tree limb, for which,
for a cold and stiff lizard, becomes a diving board. (One complete
sentence, with six commas, no less!)

My BDs love to climb. I have fake fossil rock or other fake rock (made
out of styrofoam) on the backs of their cages. They run up & down this
stuff & it gives them extra running room. My male runs back & forth like
a madman when he catches a glimpse of a female. They have either fake
stumps (very easy to clean) or climbing hiding stumps made from cork
bark & plywood. They sit on these to sun themselves & either sleep on
top or inside their tree trunk caves. I have found them to be very adept
climbers with strong claws & feet. I would be concerned about a physical
problem. Mine never fall off even when climbing the fake rock walls,
tree trunks or branches. Good luck with your beardies.

Thanks for the support Pete. I have herp experience with Iguana's,
not BD's. I could have let Animal Control axe it and bury it, I chose
not to. I thought this group would be a good place to start getting
some info, along with Mellissa Kaplan's resources. I'm sure the BD
will be very patient considering it's options. Thanks again for your
patience and support.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post Cindy. Like I said, I
rescued it. Where did you come up with the 'buy' part. It helps
others if you can at least read. His options were axe and bury by
animal control, or come to my house and we learn together.

Thanks for the info people. WE really appreciated the info. A little
more on his set-up. Cage is 3x3x5, plastic coated wire mesh. 2@3"
diameter vertical oak branches, 2@2" diameter horizontal branches.
1@4" wide piece of plywood with cutout for water bowl thyat sits
horizontal about a foot off the floor of the cage with access to
vertical branches. The heat lamp was aimed at this plywood, and it is
about 95-99 degrees there according to my thermometer. He was
actually falling off the plywood. I think he was just very
disoriented, and when he was moving around, fell down off the wood.
He has started eating kale, and has been climbing up and down the
vertical branches today checking his new home out. Thanks again for
the helpful posts and e-mails. This seems like a group of very
helpful people.

That's not entirely true. In the wild, BDs often find perches above the
ground, such as fence posts or other mid-height perches. They aren't
arboreal in that they don't live in the tree canopy like igs, but they
aren't strict ground dwellers either. A healthy BD shouldn't have a lot
of trouble getting on or off of a reasonable basking site, and I've
certainly seen and heard of them jumping from higher spots without harm.
(And FWIW, I've read about a lot of BDs since I run the BD mailing list.)

I thought the one in question was a rescue? Also, I'm not convinced
there was anything wrong with the setup.

The plywood may have been slippery. You might want to wrap some rope or
some of that textured shelf liner around it.

And while I'm at it:

Many lizards, including BDs, change color to reflect mood or temperature.
In this case, he's turning darker to absorb heat faster. It's totally
normal.

mine often falls from his branch. I consider it falling anyway. I think he
is too lazy to climb back down the branch so he tries to jump to the log
or ground below which makes a very loud thump.
I have two inches of sand in the bottom of his cage and the branch is
probably about ten inches high at the highest point. I dont think it hurts
him since he keeps doing it. It could be that the dragon is just to lazy
to climb down and is trying to jump down.
It doesn look like it but they are actually quite good at jumping. mine
often jumps from the hot branch to the cold one clearing a distance of
about eight inches.

As long as the floor isnt too hard I wouldnt think that twelve inches could hurt it much. My bearded
dragon does have a weird sense of distance though so keep an eye on it. I once left the door of his cage
open while getting his food. I figured it was about two feet to the floor so he wouldnt jump out. Wrong.
He made a resounding thud and proceeded to run for the kitchen. I almost didnt catch him before he made it
under the cabinets.
Maybe he thinks he can fly I dont leave his cage door open any more and I dont let him sit on window sills
or anythng tall anymore since he keeps trying to jump to the ground.

I think you are confusing arboreal with basking. Bearded Dragons will often
climb up on fence posts in the wild... similar to how they do on basking
spots. They spend more time on the ground, but.. they can spend most of
their time higher up.. as they are good climbers.

I have a BD male that likes to jump from his tree trunk into his water
dish. I think he enjoys doing this for some weird reason. He spreads his
legs out straight to make a big splash. He seems to enjoy the water
splashing. I just put extra newspapers under his water dish so I can
clean up his mess easier. He especially loves doing this when I have
just filled his dish &/or cleaned his cage. Anyone else have H2O diving

A few big flat rocks around the water dish helps keep the rest of the cage a
little drier. I also changed to a shallower water dish. He probably wouldnt
like the dive in the new one since it is only about 1 1/2 inches deep.

My BD has only dived into his water a couple of times but he does like to
run through it just after I have changed it. He also likes to climb around
his cage but the weird thing he does (I think I've mentioned it before) is
when he goes to sleep for the night, he stands up in the corner on his two
hind legs and goes to sleep. I've seen him go to sleep this way and still be
in that same position the next morning.

A price tag just might save that herp's life, and if I can recoup a
scant few of the thousands of dollars I've spent on gas, tires, and

My bearded has started sleeping on half of a hollow log I put in his cage. he
starts to climb up it but leaves his back legs on the floor of the cage so that
he is half on and half off of the log he sleeps like this for the entire night.
I thought that he might sleep under it, and there is a nice dip in the sand
where he plays under it sometimes but I have never seen him sleep under it.

Mine seems to do it more after he has eaten. maybe it makes his belly feel
better after a big meal. It might also be because of the light that just barely
hits the log enough to warm it.
Arent beardeds great?
Almost everything mine does makes absolutely no sense.
He has started that mouth opening thing that we were talking about a few weeks
ago. I guess since its gotten warmer the light is a lot hotter to him, and he is
to lazy to move from under it. Maybe I should find a lower wattage bulb.
