Dog in Deadly S.F. Attack Killed

.c The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The second of two dogs that mauled a woman to death
outside her apartment door last year was destroyed Wednesday.

The dog, Hera, had been in city custody for the past year. Bane, the other
Presa Canario dog primarily responsible for the mauling, was put to death
immediately after the attack on Diane Whipple.

A city hearing officer determined Hera was dangerous and ordered her destroyed
a year ago. But an animal rights lawyer challenged the move, with support from
the couple who kept the dogs, Robert Noel and Marjorie Knoller.

Lower courts ruled in favor of the city, and the state Supreme Court two weeks
ago refused to hear the case.

Jury selection in the trial of Noel and Knoller resumes next week in Los
Angeles. Both face charges of involuntary manslaughter and Knoller faces
second-degree murder charges in the death of their neighbor.

I know that there is almost no point to responding to you but here is
something that might make you think:

Many, many dog lovers the world over AGREE with what you are
essentially saying!

I, like many dog owners think that the following is all very wrong:

1) Training a dog to be violent
2) Using a dog in any sort of violent protection / guard situation
3) Letting dogs loose on the street in populated areas
4) Leaving dogs unattended in public or around children
5) Allowing unfettered breeding
6) Mixing children and dogs without any sense of responsibility or
forethought
7) Walking dogs off leash
8) Abandoning dogs allowing them to become "wild" dogs roaming the
streets
9) Irresponsible idiots getting big dogs without training them or
understanding them

The point is, if all dog-owners approached their responsibilities in a
mature, rational way there would be no dog mauling cases for you to
harp about. It's like trying to ban cars because cars run people over.
The dog owners in these cases are almost always at fault for one
reason or another. Your constant railing is only annoying. Should we
come to your dorky radio scanner newsgroups and constantly crap on you
about nonsense?
