I have had people ask if our chocolate Lab is a Cocker Spaniel
and a Rottweiler. Luckily, some people don't even try to
guess and just ask "What kind of dog is that?" I bet there
have been some really interesting guesses on some of the less
familiar breeds!

Well, at least people usually do guess that my basset, Raleigh
is a dog. However, so many people have said "ooh, look at the
weiner dog" that I'm tempted to get a T-shirt made that says
"no, he's not a wiener dog..." on the front and
"... he's a Hush Puppy dog" on the back.
Then we've had at least two people who were convinced he was

*snicker* I know the feeling, Maria! Everyone thinks Our Mal is
a Husky, which is, of course, an understandable mistake... :)
However:
Last night, my SO and I were walking Scotty the GSD, and Alex
the Mal through the neighborhood, and a little 3 year old boy,
who was out in his yard with his mom, ran to the edge of the
yard, stopped, and asked "Can I pet your wolf?" Considering
Alex outwieghed him by probably a good 30 pounds, and was
taller(!), the mother became appropriately concerned and told
him maybe he shouldn't. We explained that Alex was a very
friendly, well-behaved Alaskan Malamute, and the boy was welcome
to pet him. Alex sat calmly (yea! I was proud!) while the boy
petted him, and we congratulated the mom for teaching her son to
ask before he ran up and started petting an unfamiliar dog. She
was proud, too... :)

I find it amazing the number of people who ask if my giant schnauzer is a
scotty; but even funnier: About 20 years ago I had a Lhasa Apso and an
Afghan, both gold and people would continually ask me if the Afghan was the
Lhasa's mother. Somehow, I kept a straight face and told them it was the
other way around (both dogs were about 7b months old.)
The other thing with the afghan was a lot of people actually believed me
when I told them it was a new breed, a Poboon, a cross between a pony and a
baboon.

Looking at their dog, I was a bit dismayed because while it may have had a
bit of smooth fox blood in it, it was very much not a fox terrier. It was
short snouted, narrow chested, and kinda pug eyed. Also spotted, though that
can happen. Seems they bought the dog from a backyard breeder who told em it
was a fox terrier. The amusing part was not that, since I didn't have the
heart to tell them, I let them enjoy their dogs pedigree and complimented its
looks. As I was leaving, the male made a comment comparing George to their dog,
to which the woman responded 'Yeah, but his dog was cute.'
Poor dog and poor couple. At least the dog was cut so someday in a future
trip to NJ I wouldn't encounter the New Really Smooth Fox Terrier Club. Still
its a shame for folk who spend the money on a pure breed not to get what they
paid for.

I often get asked if our cocker spaniel is a poodle, especially when
we let his topknot get long and curly. I guess he could look like
a poodle of sorts, one who's just been to the dentist and his lips
are floppy from novacaine.
I also had one poor soul ask if our cocker was a border collie! When
I asked why, he mentioned that our dog was black and white, and he'd
heard that border collies are black and white.

My favorite story along this line happened when I took Misha to visit my
grandmother at the old folk's home. I was walking down the aisle with Misha
on a short leash. An old lady strapped in a wheelchair looked at her and
held up her hands, saying, "Keep it away!" I held Misha away and said,
"She's very gentle." The old lady peered at her and tentatively held out a
hand. Misha barely moved her head in the hand's direction, mostly standing
very still. The old lady ended up petting Misha's big head and telling her
she was a good dog. Realize that standing straight, Misha's head came above
the arm of the lady's wheelchair, almost looking her straight in the face.
Actually the what-kind-of-dog story is the old man standing in the doorway in
the same hall. He looked at Misha and matter-of-factly said, "That a
mastiff?" "Yup," I said. "Thought so," he said. I still can't stop
grinning when I think about it.

If in England, you'd be asked if she was a Dulux dog. And she is! In
Canada the paint is sold as CIL Dulux, and they do use an OES, but to
a lesser extent than the English ads, which feature the dog quite
prominently. The English Dulux TV ads with the OES
are a riot - I saw one when vacationing there a couple of months ago
with the dog "singing" My Way through the ad. Unfortunately many years
of Dulux ads have made the breed very popular, to its detriment.

My other dog Haley is a mix, probably terrier (Jack Russell or Fox) and
sheltie - she looks like a short-haired sable/white sheltie with a terrier-
looking head. A lot of people ask me what kind of mix she is. One hysterical
mother (her kids were running up to pet the puppy) screamed "is she a pit
bull?!!!" Haley does NOT look anything like a pit bull, and I explained what
I thought her mix was, while Haley happily grinned and wagged at the kids. I
couldn't convince her that my obviously vicious ;-) dog was not a pit bull.
I think the funniest guess about Haley's genetic heritage came from someone at
the dog park who asked me if she was a Rhodesian Ridgeback. I'm sorry, but she
does not look ANYTHING like a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Never in a million years
could she be mistaken for one, yet she was. Honestly, what was that person

You're a *lot* more polite than I am when people say anything
derogatory about my son - I mean dog. Most people thinks Brinks (my
Bullmastiff) is beautiful (those with taste anyway ;), but every once
in a while I run across someone who not only thinks he's unattractive
they have the NERVE to tell me so. (Some of you have heard this story
before) Once I was kneeling down, petting to Brinks outside of a
grocery store when this guy walked by and said, "Boy, that's a face
only a mother could love" to which I replied, "HEY! You're no prize
yourself, buddy!" The guy actually turned and looked at me like *I*
was being rude instead of just defending the honor of my loved one.
In your scenario, instead of "Why, thank you", I'd probably say something
like, "Well, to him you probably look like a ______" (fill in the blank
with the animal that most resembles the Dope, e.g. hippo, giraffe, bear,
warthog, moose, etc.) and see how they liked it.
Why is it that people assume since they think your dog is unattractive
that everyone else (including their owner) feels the same way and that
it's o.k. to say so? They wouldn't say that they thought your (human)
child was ugly and you don't get to choose what they look like the way
you choose a particular breed of dog.

I know what a smooth collie is. ;-) Our Belgian Sheepdog has been called
a Schipperke (when he was a puppy), a black GSD, and a Lab mix. As fate
would have it, I saw someone at a wine festival over the weekend and got
to tell them they had a Belgian. They found the dog and didn't have the
foggiest as to what he was. So it can work both ways.
The best misidentification of our dogs was our Lab/Aussie Shep
mix--black with white spots. Someone once asked if she was a
Dalmatian!! Go figure that one...

Piece of cake.... :-) (And, quite honestly, I don't know if the AKC
recognizes the smooth collie, but it doesn't matter because the nimnul to whom
you're speaking won't know the difference anyway... *grin* I'd go to check
out the May issue of Life where they have a 2-page spread with a tiny little
picture of all the breeds the AKC recognizes (taken during Westminster), but
it's in the folks' room and their in bed...)
10... "Good thing the American Kennel Club has then, I guess..."
9... "Oh, my God! Then he must not be one!"
8... "Well, obviously you don't know much about purebreds then."
7... "Gee, I'll tell you *all* about smooth, bearded and rough collies
then..." (and proceed to do so in *agonizing* detail)
6... "I'm sorry." (followed by a sweet, condescending smile)
5... "And your affiliation with the American Kennel Club is....??? "
4... "Have you heard of ..." (and proceed to list as many obscure breeds as
you possibly can)
3... "Well, not all collies can be Lassie."
2... "Uh oh. I've just given you top secret information and now I'm going
to have to kill you."
and the Number 1 snappy comeback is...
1... "I didn't know the AKC had to check with you before recognizing
breeds."

I love this too!! We have three smooth collies in the family (all blue
merles) and I took them to the local pet store to have their picture
made together. More than once they were mistaken for father, mother,
and baby - but they had them all mixed up. They thought:
Father - Scout (who was only 1yr old, but was a good 3 inches taller than
the other male, Laddie, and weighed in at 70lbs at the time and is THIN!)
Mother - Laddie (this was tooo funny!!! since he's obviously a male)
Baby - Patches (who is Laddies litter mate - they are both 3 years old.)
The people turned a nice shade of red when I told them that Scout was
actually the baby of the group and that 'Mother' was actually the brother
of the 'baby'. :-) :-) :-)
Being the owner of a smooth collie has a couple of drawbacks - one of
them is dealing with insenstive jerks who feel the need to point out how
large Scouts nose is. The other is dealing with ignorant people who think
all collies have look like Lassie. grrrrr.
(the reality is that Scouts nose is no bigger than Lassies was/is - but
without all that fluff around the face, it just looks larger)
One day at the pet store I lost it. I've learned to deal with ignorant
people, and can usually ignore the insenstive ones, but not that day. This
woman had her husband and son with her and she looked over, pointed, and
said "Oh my GAWD, look at the HUGE nose on that dog!" Now - what I *reallY*
wanted to do was say "Have you looked at your BUTT lately?" but I was good.
I did say "Dogs are like people. All of them are different. Some have big
ears, some have long tails, some even have a 'spare tire' and a big butt.
I prefer to judge what is INSIDE instead of OUTSIDE." She looked at me like
I was a certifiable lunatic, but the cashier and I got a good laugh out of
it. :-)
Scout looked at me like "Way to go Mom!"
My GSD is mostly black with silver trim, and I'm constantly surprised by how
many people have looked at her and asked, "Is she a German Shepherd?"

Lucky you, Dianne! :-) My Beardie never gets "identified" as a Beardie! He
has been called an Old English Sheepdog, the Shaggy DA, Barkley from "Sesame
Street" (even though he's a born black, not a brown).. but more often than
that, he's simply known as the "How can he see with all that hair?" dog.

And I'm glad to hear I don't have the only floppy eared ACD in existance.
Poor Roo gets "dissed" as an ACD because of her ears (she had problems with
her teeth as a puppy, I'm guessing it affected the ears as well). When she's
alert, she has "tipped" (Collie) ears, but when she's relaxed, her right
ear is totally flat (sigh). Same ear as my pet quality Norwegian Elkhound
I used to have, so I say I'm just fated to own floppy eared dogs :-). She's
also "mottled", which is the color that's more white with speckles, it's
unusual so not as accepted. But judging by the way she uses the teeth she
has on her surrogate cow (Impi the Elkhound), she's all ACD!!

Blue, a black chow, gets mistaken as a small Newfoundland, a black Akita,
a big keeshound(sp?), a bear. Occasionaly I get conversation like this:
"Cool dog, what is it?"
"A chow."
"I didn't know chows come in black. Is he full blood?"
"Well, I think he got all the blood he needs."
One time we were at a pet fair and a man and his ladyfriend walked up to us.
The man circled Blue a couple of times and told his friend (and us) that
"This dog is not perfect, he got pink on his lips." We didn't have a good
comeback because we were so amazed as why this stranger felt the need to

Micki,
Similar things happen with rough collies other than sables. Kids recognize
the shape (my blue was called "Lassie" in at least 7 languages by the time
he was a year old); adults know that anything in blue has to be an Aussie.
A gardener once went into our yard, looked at my tri and blue roughs and
said, "Gee, they almost look like collies."
Of course, there's a recognition problem even with sables. It never
occurs to most people that they come in males, too.

Yes - I've had people tell me in to uncertain terms that yellow lab is a
term used only by the ignorant - that golden lab is the correct name. No
amount of gentle comments about retrievers, golden vs laborador, seems to
have an influence. Now, I'm no expert, so I'm unwilling to be too firm on

Ackth! What a moron! Don't you hate people like this!
Guess he's asking to be mauled....
Back to mistaken identity, my chow other than a bear, she was also
mistakenly identified as a Lab, Retriever and even a GSD, none of which are
even close resemblance. One time I was walking with my dogs and this
jogger lady said, "Oh what a cute German Sheperd puppy" I replied,
"No, she's not a GSD, she's a Chow dog." Kira, my Chow smiled (actually
stuck her blue-purple tongue out, you know that cute doggie grin) and
this lady went on, "What happend to her tongue?" and I calmly answered,
"That's one of the main characteristics of Chows" and left.
Another incident, was when I was shopping with my dogs at PetStore.
One man (about 10ft away from my dogs and me) said to his son,
"Look Son, a 'long-haired sharpei'!" I guess I can understand
the face resemblance between chows and sharpeis...but... oh well
I tried to ignor him and triend not to laugh.
My other dog, maltese, also have his share of that "mistaken identity."
I keep his fur/hair short -- puppy cut, so wherever we go, he's always
mistaken to either a puppy Bichon Frise(sp?), Westie, or a miniature
Poodle. But I guess that's better than being identified as a "stuff toy".
Poor Mr. MaGoo (Goober), was mistakenly if not compared, identified as
some sort of a stuff toy. Last Mother's day I was at my parents' house
and brought my dogs with me. One of the first thing Goober does when
we go to my Parents house is to sit/relax on my Mom's loveseat. That day,
Mom happend to have other visitors. There was this lady visitor (who btw,
never stop talking) was about to sit on this loveseat where Goober was
snoozing. Just about she was ready to drop her butt, my Mom said
"Wait...!" and followed by this angry barks..."Hey Lady....get your
fat butt off my face!!!!" And the lady screamed,"Oh my God, I didn't
know it was a real dog! I thought it was one of your grandchildren's
STUFF TOY!" Puhleeez.... even if it was 'a toy', if it was mine,
I certainly don't want my "toy" to be flatten by that woman's butt!!!
>Viola and Blue the "not perfect, vicious" chow
Regina, Kira the "gsd-NOT" Chow and Goober the "stuff-toy-look-alike" Maltese.
For other animals....
I went camping once with my Chow and Maltese. We've unintentionally
spooked some hikers who thought my Chow was a "bear" or a "cub on a leash."
My Maltese was mistaken for a "barking rabbit"
By the end of the day, both furball managed to win some friends (hikers).
Regina, Kira the bear-look-alike Chow and Goober (Mr.MaGoo) the barking rabbit
Maltese.
Yes, as a matter of fact the Siberian Sheepdog is a real breed.
