Keemaka's Don't Open the Box..."Pandora" was named for her outrageous behavior
in the whelping room and whelping box...every time we moved the
"mama gate" out climbed little Miss Trouble...starting at 2.5 weeks! Everyone
said I was crazy to keep her, but she has been a great companion.

I was going to name my dog Oreo (she's black with a strip down her chest),
but that sounded too silly because she was such a regal pup. The I decided I
was going to call her Jennie because this regalness reminded me of my dearly
beloved Great-Grandma Jennie. However, I asked my grandma about it and she
flatly refused to let me name my dog after her mother! (Now I'm glad I
didn't because I have a totally adorable niece named Jennie!) I thought
about another name that would indicate this little girl was adorably regal
and finally decided on Princess. She really is a dear Princess.

My cat was named for a character in a series of books by E.E. "Doc" Smith.
One character in the series was a nurse. She was left on a planet where the
inhabitants routinely went nude while the men went off and fought the bad
guys. (This is OLD science fiction!) However, this character wasn't one to
handle that and her nurse's whites turned very gray before she was picked
back up. This character's name was Clarissa McDougal Kinnison. So, my gray
cat with some white on her because Clarissa.

Well, I was living in the basement of a private home during grad
school. When we started discussing whether or not I could get a dog,
we (my landlord, landlady and I) didn't want to say "dog" in front of
their five-year old (thereby getting her hopes up!) so we would refer
to the "og-day."

When I brought the dog home "og-day" metamorphed to "Ogden" until I
could "think of something more appropriate." But that "something"
never came to mind -- Ogden just seems to suit her! So she's been
Ogden or Oggie ever since.

Raven is half Black Labrador Retriever, half White German Shepherd. We
call her a "Gerbridor Schlepper". When I first got her at 10 weeks old,
the people I got her from hadn't named her. I started calling her "Jet"
because she was jet-black, but it didn't seem to fit. So I looked in
the Thesaurus under "black". There was a whole list of synonyms, and
"raven" just jumped right out at me. It was perfect. She was shiny
black, a swift runner and very graceful like a bird. Of course, she's
now 12+ years old, her coat's gotten sort of fluffy and reddish in the
sun, and her arthritis has really slowed her down. But she'll always
be my Raven-baby.

Frieda got her name out of laziness on my part. She was lost during
Hurricane Andrew, and we adopted her from a HA rescue group. They
named her "Frito Bandito" (she, like almost all the other dogs lost or
abandoned during the hurricane, had no ID so they made up names for
them) because they persuaded her to come to them with Frito's Corn Chips,
and they never bothered to check that she was female and recorded her
as a male. Since she was a female, we decided to feminize her name,
and Frieda sounded like Frito, and it's also a German sounding name and
she's part German Shepherd. In retrospect, we should have named her Windy!

Okay, I've been holding out cuz I've got 3 dogs and didn't think anyone
would care:

Edric - a.k.a. Edric the Wonder Mutt
Edric was given to the humane society in May of 1990. At that time, the
shelter gave names to all but litters of pups and kittens, and did it based
on the month, so January was "A" month, February was "B" month and so on.
Because he came in during the fifth month, he was destined to have a name
that started with "E" - the fifth letter of the alphabet. The then-manager
opened her handy baby book and found Edric, which sounded German and thus
appropriate for a GSD mix. "WonderMutt" was applied later, by a friend who
found his submissive urination amusing. It's kinda fun now, going to
agility trials with "Edric the Wonder Mutt"

Kati - AKC registered name O'BJ Kati A Maker of the Pace
Boring AKC story. There's a woman named Katie Asling who breeds Akitas and
has long advocated the acceptance of long-coated Akitas in the ring, mostly
to stop breeders from culling longcoats. (Kati is a long-coated Akita -
truly a hairy dog) I've been impressed by her passionate articles in Akita
literature, so "Kati A" is a nod to her, as well as a scramble of the word
"Akita". O'BJ is the kennel name, "Maker" comes from her sire, Ch. The
Widow-Maker O'BJ ROM and "Pace" comes from her dam, UKC's Overhill's Pacer.

Gypsy
I thought letting my husband pick her name would help him feel like he had a
choice in whether or not we got her. She was originally Kea, and when we
got her at 9 months of age, she was used to the nicknames "Chickpea",
"CheePee", "ChiaPet" (because she hackles from head to tail when frightened,
and her foster mom's 3 year old son said "Mom, she looks just like a Chia
Pet"), "Sweet Pea" and so on. Because she was an older puppy, we didn't
want to confuse her badly, but she'd had 7 homes - Gypsy, which sounds kinda
like Chickpea, truly suited her, and I was delighted he didn't opt to name
her Sh*thead.

Through the years my husband told me stories of "Saint," his illustrious
Saint Bernard. I in turn through the years told these endearing stories
to innumerable others.

When we decided to get our first dog, after over 20 years of hearing about
"Saint," my questionably better half felt it was the proper time to fess up
to his wonderful ruse. "Saint" never existed!

We opted for Newfies as our breed of choice. Each carries "Saint" as part of
their AKC registration names. When it comes time for another Newf, he/she
will also be "Saint ???."

We currently have Saint Mishanameekee (means great thunder; Misha for short),
Saint Serendipity (Sara for short), and Boomer (our rescue--we weren't allowed
by AKC to change it to Saint Boomer, but we would've it we could've).

Hello Stacey,
I have three dogs. One is a Collie-Lab cross, which we got from a
rescue centre. We called her Pebbles, since our last dog who died
a short time before was called Dino, and we wanted to have a
connection (the Flintstones!)

The next dog we also rescued - a Whippet, which we called Chairha
(pronounced Kara). We saw this name on the back of a taxi cab!

Our youngest dog is a Bull Terrier, called Sophie. We don't
remember why we called her that. She is our only pedigree dog, and
she wins prizes in dog shows.

Best Wishes

When I was a French major I got a little mixed breed puppy. No one knew what
he was - a little cocker, a little poodle, and a little Welsh or Airedale
terrier. I happened to be reading Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot"
(Entendant pour Godot) at the
time. In the play, 2 characters stand around and discuss the nature of
Godot as they do not know the answer. So, I named my puppy Godot.

Jake (really Jaco) was named after a famous bass player, Jaco Pastorius.
Another bass player's name was considered, but then abandoned: Flea :^}

Mongo weighed only about 2.5 pounds when we got him, and needed a tough-
guy name. He's named after Alex Karras's character in "Blazing Saddles."
"Mongo just pawn in game of life."

Justine was named even before we decided to buy her. I think she told me
via ESP, since I never even considered another name.

P.S. Our American Eskimo is called Tuktoyuktuk. Tuk for short. Why else,
because he's an Eskimo. Our Samoyed is, disgustingly enough, called Sam. He was called Saxon when we got him, but too many people had fun playing word games with the name Tuk. A Tuk and a Sax would be too much, especially when praising them with the word good (Good Tuk. Good Sax). So we were looking for another name. In the meantime, all the neighbours called him Sam and it stuck. We've lengthened it to Samson in honour of the vast amounts of hair (fur).

I had Goldens growing up... the last one, Molson, was a pun just too good to
pass up. We also had a 22-pound Maine coon cat named Mongo, and a black
domestic shorthair named Darth Vader.

When I got my first Beardie as a baby pup, it was some days before I could
decide on a name. One of my majors was mediaeval English literature, so I
chose a name that would adequately describe someone who was gray, bearded,
enchanting, and Celtic: Merlin.

Duncan came to me with his name, and I found it too lovely to change.

During my childhood, we always had a dog or 2. The first one
I remember was Peanuts, but I was too young to remember
how he got the name. One Xmas Eve, my dad brought home
a Heinz 57 variety in his coat pocket (someone was going to
drown her!!!!!! :-( ). Anyway.....on the way home, they stopped
at the local bar. They decided to give the pup a little whiskey
mixed with chocolate milk. So her name stuck as "Whiskey".
If she ever had a tendency to be an alcoholic, that one time
cured her. She was "under the weather" all Xmas morning.

Another dog we had for a very short time (a stray that
wondered into our kitchen and was claimed a couple weeks
later) was named "Droopy". He was some type of hound with
ears about a foot long. He kept stepping on them when he walked
and they where always in his food and water bowls.

We now have a black Lab (we think.......he was a stray from the
SPCA, but he looks/acts exactly like a Lab) named Brer Dog. No
story behind his name........I have always liked the movie "Song of
the South" (you know....Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, Brer Fox, etc)
and read the Uncle Remus stories to my son all of the time.

Jeff, Krist, and Brer Dog - The only dog I've ever seen climb
a 6 foot ladder so he can go down the slide.

Our border collie required a Scottish name, but Scottish female names
proved difficult (to us) to agree upon. At the time she was wee, and we
hoped she would turn out to be a bonnie lassie, so Wee Bonnie Lass she

Forgot my favorite dog name of all. The former manager of the shelter I
volunteered at for so long had a little poodle - black with white markings,
cute as the dickens, about 10-15 pounds. He had been abandoned prior to the
shelter's existence, and saved by the humane society. He was in pretty bad
shape - matts everywhere, especially around his ears (he still has bald
patches) and there was considerable skin-rot under the matts. When she went
to pick him up from the vet who was treating his variety of medical
problems, they said "Oh, you must be here for the maggot dog". The name
stuck. Yep - Maggot.

I have 2 dogs, both are adopted. The one that I've had the longest is a
lab or lab mix who was more than 20 lbs overweight when I first got her.
SHe looked like a beer keg with legs. Fire trucks passed by several
times the first couple days that I had her and she howled VERY loudly at
the sirens. Because she was overweight and was VERY loud I thought I'd
call her Ethel (for Ethel Merman). She has since lost the x-tra weight
but still howls at sirens.

the other dog I have is (as far as I can tell) a GSD-Chow cross. I named
him Gareth. From the Arthurial legend Gareth was the youngest brother of
Gawaine and came to Arthur's court as an orphan. Seemed apropriate
because I adopted this dog also.

My husband and I like to name our animals "people" names. When our yellow
lab was chosen, I poured over baby books, watched soap operas (that I
usually don't watch, but are full of great names) and paid more attention
to people's names than usual. Finally, we decided on Suzanne. It is such
a great name to say over, and over, and over....well you know what I'm
talking about.

She is now 18 months old and recently my husband decided she needed a
proper middle name. Growing up in an Italian neighborhood in NJ, every
other girl in his school had Marie as her middle name. Hence, Suzanne
Marie.

When I was young my sister arranged for a puppy to be dropped off, in a box
with a blanket and a note, on our front doorstep. This dog was supposed to
be half daschund but, upon maturity, she appeared to be a full bodied

interesting dog. Anyhow, whenever you picked the puppy up she'd groan so
my Dad named her Bing Crosby because Dad said he used to be known as the

This post doesn't concern how our current dogs got their names; rather,
it proposes sets of names for future dogs.

As a graduate student, you get used to hearing the names of famous
co-authors spoken together.

For example, you might hear repeated reference to "Smith and Johnson's
theory of X".

In economics, you always hear about "Arrow and Debreu." So I suggested to
my girlfriend we name our next two dogs "Arrow" and "Debreu."

Surely my economist friends would laugh when I say "These are my dogs
-- Arrow and Debreu."

She said Arrow was OK, but she nixed Debreu.

Hi Stacey, welcome to rpd :)

Our oldest dog, a 9 1/2 year old black lab/beagle X, had the misfortune to come
into my life when I had a *huge* crush on Chad Lowe (Rob Lowe's younger
brother), so, Chad he became! Fortunately, it suits him.

Our younger dog, an almost 2 year old yellow lab, came with a registered name
of Watertails Bold Periwinkle, with Peri as her call name. My SO couldn't
stand the name Peri, so, we changed it to Kerry.

We also have three cats, Babe ( named after the Styx song ), Toonces ( named
when I got him, after the cat in the SNL skit ) and Thomas ( well, because
he *looks* like a Thomas ).

I *love* coming up with names :)

around his 9-wk old brother, he reminded me of a old wrestler named
Kenji Shibuya. Yet he was cute, like Benji. Err, hey "Kenji !"

My female Shiba is officially named Jitterbug by her breeding kennel.
But the breeder who bought her renamed her call name, "Piper".
Since Shiba puppies look like bear cubs, and there's an airplane
called a Piper Cub ... well, one thing follows the other. I just
call her the Hyper Piper, but boy, she can FLY.

I have a rescue Aussie here who was facing euthanasia because his owners

finally did they didn't want to claim him because he'd been such a

My Shetland Sheepdog, Darby, was named at the suggestion of a friend of my

she was just about the cutest puppy he had ever seen, and told me about a

every woman who saw him fell instantly in love with him. I'd never heard

My standard poodle is named Cyrano because his nose is so long--we also call
him Cyranose, and Cyranosey, because his nose is also always on our laps for
petting (he *really* likes his nose to be petted).

We got our mini-dachsund right during Pee-Wee Herman's big problems. I
*loved* Pee-Wee Herman, so we named our new puppy after him. Our friends
also call her "Wee-Wee" because if you get her excited enough, which is no
big challenge, she'll "Wee-Wee" right on the carpet for us!

Also, since my husband and I are both in the electronics industry, we named
our cat Zener D., after a zener diode (an electronic part). Plus, the name
has an abrasive sound to it, which matches her personality.

I got a Yellow lab puppy about 6 months ago, and spent days thinking about
a name and couldn't think of anything! I was sitting out on the porch one
evening, and started to think about her color. It was kind of a golden
color, like wheat or barley. I looked-up and saw my neighbor's American
flag, and the words to the song start going through my head:
"amber waves of grain".

Hence the name Amber..

We have two dogs. The elder dog was mine before I married. He
is a black lab/English setter mix named Baxter, in part after
an alumnus of the previous institution I worked at (I thought
it was an odd name for a human but a good dog name) and in part
after the NPR commentator Baxter Black (cowboy poet,
philosopher and former large-animal veterinarian). Baxter is
also occasionally known as "mama's boy".

We adopted our second dog, a black lab/Chesapeake retriever
mix, last year. We chose to go with a bit of local lore, and
named him Cyrus after famous Rockbridge Co. resident Cyrus
McCormick, inventor of the reaper. Cyrus is sometimes known as
"little boy", rather a misnomer considering he weighs 80 lbs.!

her. My so and I both grew up in Phoenix, AZ. There is family owned
ice cream parlor there called Mary Coyles. Their small sized sundaes

Since our Pippen weighs 14# it fits!

BTW - for the 1st week we called Pippen "Lucy" to go with "Sally", like the

Fridays to tend to the needs of the animals and to put the

One Friday, my vet was there, about to put a puppy to sleep

I immediately fell in love and repeatedly said to her "Thank God

my black labrador retriever's name is Perdon. He is only just 6
years old although I've only had him for 18 months.

I got him through a friend of a friend of a friend (you know) who
had had him since a pup but had recently moved, the husband had lost
his job and basically lost interest. He had been chained up on a
4m chain to his kennel and never taken out.

It was this husband who read witchy and mystical books, and in one,
there was a black knight called Perdon - hence his name. He has now
settled down and after taking him to basic training (at the age of
4 and half years!) he came second in the class.

I also taught him to swim this year. You feel such a fool standing
on the shore shouting at your dog that he CAN do it, and yelling
with joy the first time he actually swam. Luckily, there wasn't
anyone around who I knew at the time!

A few years ago I found a labrador lost in our garden. His name tag said Corrie and gave an address just round the corner. I took 'Corrie' round there but his owners weren't at home. We left him in the owners garden with the gate now closed, and they came round a few hours later to thank us for returning their lost pooch. In fact, they were called Corrie, the dog was called Dylan. When we got a golden retriever a little while later (Dylan has made his mark on us...) we decided Corrie was a good name in its

elf and that is what he was called. Unfortunately, we met the owners of Dylan a little while later and my wife explained to them, innocently and quite cheerfully, that we now had a dog, and has named it after them......then were't sure that was a compliment....

We found our first dog as a pup (we think she is a beagle-boxer mix)
and she has a brown coat with white feet (kind of like socks). Well
I am from Chicago and a huge White Sox fan, so this was a good
starting place for the name. Since Boston has the Red Sox, the
common short name for the White Sox is the Chi-Sox. So that's what
we named her - ChiSox. I get a lot of weird looks when I use that
name here in Houston since not too many people are familiar with the
White Sox.

Well, I just got a new pet. He is an ex-racing greyhound. And
no, he is not hyper-active (everyone keeps asking me that!).

We were going to give him an ancient egyptian name, but they seem
to be used for condom brands or something...

So, then we were going to call him Trigger, since he looks like a
big white horse. No.

Finally, on the second day we had "whatshisname" we went for a walk,
and he took a pee on a particular patch of snow that had the name
"Clayton" written on it. So, since that is where he made his mark,
that is what his name is. Clayton (Clay for short).

By the way. This is the second greyhound we have had, the first
being an Italian greyhound, and they have made excellent pets. Seems
that some people think this is an exception to the rule though. ???

My husband normally comes up with the names for our pets. =-) He has
a mind that gathers facts and tidbits and his brain goes a million

"Bijou" was perfect. Kinda strange given we didn't know what it meant
in French until someone said, "Oh, that's French... for gem or jewel
or something like that?"

Our dog, Kiska, is an American Eskimo, so you can guess how the name came
about.

His full name (on the papers) is "Tee's Kiska Amundsen Gross"

Tee's = Breeder's name
Kiska = see above
Amundsen = an artic/antarctic explorer; a historical favorite
Gross = our family name

My dog, a Siberian Husky, is names Natasha, as I wanted a
good Russian name.

I'm trying to get my roommate to rename his rat terrier
to Boris, but he won't go for it.

BTW, you can check out Natasha at:

I don't know if it's interesting, but I love to talk about our dog,
Maggie. She's named after Margartia Chascarilla, aka Maggie, in the
comic Love 'n Rockets. Our next dog will be named Hopey, after Maggie's
friend/lover/confidante . . . In the spirit of Hopey, we call Maggie
Maggot.

My husband and I had always threatened to name our first child "Hector" to
rhyme with our last name, Fechter. Well, we got the dog before we were
blessed with a baby (a girl) so our beloved dog, whom we've had for 11 1/2
years, is Hector Victor Fechter. Since he has no breeding (he's about as
generic as a dog can get), he is just plain Hector. Of course, there is
instant name recognition at the vet's, the kennel, etc.

our dog Squire got his name because we purchased him in England and the
name seemed appropriate (he was a minature poodle) and our other dog (a
toy poodle 6 years younger than Squire) name is Mouse, so name because
when we first got him he was small enough to sit in your hand like a
little mouse.

Squire has passed on at the age of 14 but mouse is still going strong..

Our black female spaniel/collie-mix was named "Moriko", which means "forest
child" in Japanese (a common girl's name), because the humane society found her
as an approximately 1 year-old puppy hanging around a National Forest campground.

For the past six years she has been the mellowest, most affectionate, and most
trainable dog I have ever known.

My year-old sable & white rough collie got his name "Rocky"
because my husband is a stone mason. Seemed appropriate
at the time! We're getting a female blue merle rough
collie in another 18 months or so..... we'll be
naming her "Shim". (For all the non-stone masons
out there, the shims are the little chips of rock
that fit in the wall beside the big rocks). Our little
"Shim" should fit in quite well beside the big "Rock"!!

I have two dogs both unknown mixed breeds.

1. DD - Got her while still in the military and since the spouse was known
in military channels as DW (dependent wife), the dog became DD
(dependent dog)

2. Hali - The worst puppy breath in the WORLD. Some it was shortened from
halitosis (BAD BREATH) to Hali.
