Easy - put her on the regular-sized Iams. That should be big enough that
she'll be forced to chew a bit. Oddly, the opposite seems to work for my
big dog - she chews the smaller kibble but will inhale the medium-large
chunks whole. Go figure... ;}

Gretel eats her meals so fast that she chokes on her food and sometimes
throws it back up -- blech!

I give her Iams Mini-Chunks and she doesn't bother to stop and chew at all --
just inhales. It doesn't seem to matter if there is alot or a little in her
dish and it also doesn't seem to matter if she is alone in the comfort of
her space or crate or surrounded by kittykats and humans. She's just over one
year old (Sept. 12 birthdate).

Does anyone have any suggestions on getting my dachsie to eat slower and maybe
chew her food just a little. Thanks in advance.

Please e-mail so...@psych.toronto.edu. It's difficult to keep up with

I don't know about Dachsunds, but my Corgi used to do this. Assuming she
gets plenty of exercise, the following method should work. Hand-feed your
dog (slowly!) about one-half the normal amount she gets, then give her the
whole meal in her bowl. This usually helps.

We have both a Corgi and a Dachshund that eat too fast. Since we feed dry dog food, our vet suggested that we add enough water to their bowls to float the nuggets. We have been doing this for a few years now and it seems to eliminate the choking problem since they are forced to drink as they eat.

We had a Dachshund a few years back, she was 16 when she died. She was
something! I've heard since that the traits she showed can be typical of
the breed. She was like a Hoover, sucked up anything she saw. We'd toss
a handful of popcorn onto the floor and she'd suck up every piece. Once
she drank an entire bowl of water just to get one piece of cooked
spagetti that had fallen into the dish. We called her Piglet most of the
time although her name was Snoolie. It took two years of pure hell to
get her housebroke. She was independent, possessive, selfish, but
true-blue to her pal my daughter. I couldn't leave food in the dish for
free access because she'd eat every piece. She once got into a bag of
dog food (10 pounds) and ate as much as she could. Had to take her to
the vet. I had to put her on a strict diet and stand guard when the
other dog and cats ate so Snoolie wouldn't suck up their food too. We
loved her inspite of herself.

Mine 3 sure do! They're doing better, though, since Frenchie got off Stone
Diet and they all eat dry CD.

Well, if you whish to slow it down, here's what I do.

Get two a differant sized dog food.

Lay strips in the food, so it alternats between little and big.

Put the food dish dowm, the dog will try and rip though the food, but
the differant sizes firces them to slow down.

We've never had that problem with our dachshunds, but they've always been
allowed "free feeding"--food always in the bowl--from puppies on. And no,
they've not had weight problems, probably because they prefer to eat only
when we eat. Of course, I don't know that this would have any effect on
older dogs who already have their feeding behaviors set...
