If there is no subject heading it's because I still don't know what
I'm doing re posting to this list.

Subject: Homemade dog food. I currently cook for two elderly German
Shorthaired Pointers. They have been on this diet for a little over
two years with good results. They are in good health for their ages
and conditions (13 and 9). The old one has remarkably improved in
terms of intestinal upsets. I have developed a diet based on a recipe
from Hill's (Science Diet) for homemade KD (kidney diet) which is also
low sodium. Easy to make.

Cooked white rice (I make about 18 cups at a time)
Cooked ground meat (I use turkey, sometimes mixed with hamburger
or ground pork)--Saute or boil this
Mix three parts rice to one part cooked meat.
Lately I've been boiling the meat in lots of water, removing the
meat and then cooking the rice in the same water. I have a huge pot--
stainless steel.
For each meal I add 1 teaspoon metamucil (psyllium) for fiber, and
3/4 to one teaspoon calcium carbonate (used in KD), dicalcium phosphate
can also be used, but old dogs do not need the phosphorus. I have to
ask a druggist to order this for me, and can get it in about one day.
for small dogs, TUMS (antiacid) can be used. TUMS is basically flavored
calcium carbonate. They need a lot--two or three tums for a small dog,
seven or eight for a big (60 - 70 lb.) dog. I also add one B25 and
1000mg vitamin C to each meal. Dogs are fed twice a day. They get
about as much as you would give of commercial dog food. Since this
recipe has a lot of water in it, you really need to give them quite
a lot (compared to how much rice you would eat yourself). Very active
dogs need a lot more meat.

I cooked for the whole kennel for five months, but the very active
dogs got too thin. I was using soy products (TVP, etc.) along with
the meat then, and found that soy grits went straight through the dogs
without being digested at all. I don't think the dogs were getting
much, if any, food value from the soy. I only use meat now. Cooking
for 15 large dogs was too much work for me, given that I also work
full time to support them, so I now use Pedigree and am very happy
with this dog food. I do give all dogs vitamin C and multivitamin
supplements with the exception of my latest rescue dogs (who are not
given the supplements as a test of Pedigree). The rescue dogs are
doing beautifully on straight Pedigree--excellent coats and way too
much vim and vigor--hard to wear them out.
You can substitute other carbohydrate for rice, but rice is widely
available and easily digested by dogs.

About homemade dogfood--addition/correction
I meant to say I give the B25 in the morning meal and a multivitamin/
multimineral supplement (Centrum or generic Centrum) with the night
meal. Make sure the dogs does take his vitamins. Mine try to pick
them out and are really good at eating every crumb but the vitamin.

What is the calcium carbonate for? Is that a calcium supplement?
I like to prepare home made food for my dogs sometimes too. Rice and
chicken seems to work very well. I use brown rice instead of the
white rice. It cooks quickly if you soak it for several hours or
overnight before cooking. Chicken is inexpensive, and of course, the
dogs love it.
Some people think dogs can be turned into vegetarians. I think they
will remain ccarnivors, no matter how hard those who wish they were
vegetarians hope. As opposed to a vegetarian, a dog has a short
digestive tract. If an animal has a long enough digestive tract, they
can in time derive some food value from soybeans.
I buy Pedigree too. This seems to be one of the better supermarket
brands. I am not totally down on cheap dogfood, as a housepet will
get supplements of many different kinds. Someone here threatened to
turn me over to the Purina Police for not praising their dog chow.

Dogs, like humans, are omnivores. Cats are true carnivores.
