We have a beautiful 8-month old female Samoyed ("Blizzard").

I've noticed that beneath the very short hair of her muzzle
that she has black patterns on her otherwise pink skin. Are
these typical markings? If judged in any shows, would she be
penalized for these?

When she was younger, she also had dark markings on her stomach,
but these have faded out as she has grown older.

Hi Scott:

I also have a female samoyed. She is 19 months old. She also has slight
black markings on her muzzle. I would actually call they very light grey.
They are hardly noticable. You really have to look close to see them.

Its funny that you mention that she had dark markings on her stomach when
she was younger. Jasper had perfectly pink skin on her tummy and on her
pads and developed dark markings later. The pads on her feet have dark or
black spots, but her tummy has light brown "freckles". She also has these
markings behind the ears. I can see them when I push the fur back.

I don't know if the dogs would be penalized for these markings in a show.
I've had Jasper since she was 7 wks. old and I bought her to have as a pet.
And what a wonderful pet she has turned out to be!! Don't you agree that
samoyeds make great pets!!

I have two Sams and they both have pigment under the very short
muzzle hair on the upper lip. I think this is very normal and since
they both have Ch. on their registered names, I hardly think it's
a disqualification.

I have a 10 month old male Samoyed. He had very dark markings on his
belly and pads when we got him, they are now faded and a light tan.

On his muzzle, he has biscuit colorings which look like freckles. I suppose
his skin is darker in these areas, but am not sure. Any combination of
white, cream and/or biscuit is within the breed standard. My dog also
has a bit of biscuit behind his ears and down the middle of his back.

He is a pet dog and will be neutered this Friday, but the markings are not
the reason he won't be shown.
