Hi. I wonder if anyone out there can help me out... I have two rotties, 12
months, and 16 months old. I show one. I have been feeding both of them
Eukanuba dog food since I brought them home... I started them on large breed
puppy, then large breed adult, then large breed adult mixed with
maintenance, then just maintenance. The reason I switched from Large Breed
to Maintenance was because I had such a hard time getting a hold of the
Large Breed formula. Now that Iams is being marketing in Supermarkets,
etc., none of my local suppliers will carry the Eukanuba line any more. I
loved the results Eukanuba had on my dogs.. they have such healthy shiny
coats! And then there's all the stuff about joint management and a lower
level of protein so that their growth rate is a little more controlled, etc.
Anyways, since I can't get the Eukanuba anymore, I need to replace it with
some line of food that is as good, if not better. I want something that is
designed for large/giant breeds, keeping in mind their special bone and
joint structure, and also something that is designed to promote show quality
coat, etc. in dogs. Any suggestions? The other brands available to me
include Pro Plan, Precise, Iams, Medi-Cal, and all the other supermarket
brands.

I am very happy with the results I get with Nutro Lamb & Rice.. I have a
Golden , Shar Pei and a shih tzu and assorted fosters.. The Nutro doesn't
cause any allergies (to my gang), the stool is firm and nearly odorless and
all their coats are great.. Many of the fosters have been living on Old
Roy-type foods and I can tell the difference in their coats in a matter of
weeks..Now, having said that, my friend shows and rescues Rotts and she uses
Innova (very expensive & rich-sometimes hard on the bowels) and the change
in her foster dogs is AMAZING..

I really want to try Canidea (maybe I spelled that wrong) but nobody in my
podunk town will carry something like that..

Good luck!

Have you tried some of the mail order places? I found them to have
about the same price as the local PetCo for Eukanuba. Several of my
friends buy food off the internet and have it delivered right to their
door. That's what I plan to do next time. I go through a 40 pound bag
a month of Eukanuba...so if I can get the timing down, I'll never have
to make trip to Petco for food again ;-)

I have a 5 month old Rottie and the breeder recommended Nutromax which
also contains glucosomine and condriton(sorry not sure of the spelling)
for her bones. Her coat glows i have had great results. The one I use
is the Nutro control growth for large breed I will continue to use
this brand for the rest of her life. Along with Raw bones for her
teeth of course!

Hope this helps!

I personally use the California Natural and Innova, both are all natura foods
and VERY healthy. I was using the Eukanuba also but found this food and really
like the results. My father shows Shepherds and he has his dogs on the Innova.
I have heard the Innova can cause gas. Canidae is another REALLY good food,
very similiar to Innova without the gas. Here is the web site to Innova if you
want to look at it and maybe compare a bunch of foods.

Hi, I use Nutro Max for Buddy. When I got him he was so skinny you
could see his ribcage. He has been eating the Nutro for 7 months
and looks great, nice fur, less mess to clean up. Sometimes I give him the
Oven Baked Premier chicken and rice by PetSmart and he loves that. about
5.99 a bag for either at PetSmart.
No access to Innova or some of the others. I dont feed eukonuba other
than a low residue vetrinary one when he was sick. I dont like the poultry
by products .

Personally, I use Pro Plan for my dogs, and love the results. If you want to
stay with Eukanuba, call some veterinary offices in your area, they might
have it or be able to help you find it. Also, Iams and Eukanuba are the same
company, so they are basically the same (there is very little difference
between the two). They were aimed at different markets, but now the public
has such a wide variety to chose from, they are making the premium foods
easier to get. I have extensive product information about many manufactures
of pet food, and brands (over 350 brands at this time), and my findings are
pretty consistent. Manufactures have the same food labeled many different
ways, to increase sales. So always ask questions and compare products, and
use your best judgment.

Watch out for the phosphorus levels in Nutro. One of the highest levels out
there. That's not a good thing. Excessive phosphorus levels ultimately lead
to kidney disease. That's a fact.

I have have large dogs and feel that
you should look for a food with protein
lower than 28 %, with a preferred fat
ratio of 12 or better.

Sometimes different formulas like Sporting,
Herding.. Toy....Large Breed etc., etc. can
be an advertising hype and I wonder what
is in the ingredients that makes the label and
price increase. I often think this is more for
the human consumer rather than the dog.
I currently feed Solid Gold Adult & Puppy
formulas...supplemented with Sea Meal,
Flax Oil, Vit. C and yogurt...not to mention
various fresh food items. I add glucosamine
and chondroitin to my "Veterans" diet with a
dosage that my vet advised.

Good Luck

Sheila,
Very Good Food. I have not tried the Solid Gold, but have looked at the
ingredients. I had to go with the California Nautral because my girls have
allergies.

Yea I would like to do that but Im wondering which type exactly you guys that
feed Nuto are feeding. There are so many to choose from. Im currently a
California and Innova feeder and would love to compare. I see a lot of people
on here use the Nutro.

In that case, I don't believe you can do any better.......I use a similar
formula www.bestinshowpowerfood.com brand, only because I get it locally,
and am very pleased.

We have been feeding Nutro Natural Choice Chicken & Rice - only because the
lamb and rice gives the big guys *gas* and the puppy gets Nutro Natural
Choice Puppy lamb & rice. We have found a reduction in the incidence of dry
skin and the coats are softer. What were we using? Technical Chicken & Rice
and Purina Pro Chicken & Rice. Yeah, I like a chicken based dog food.

Well I compared the Chikcen and Rice Nutro. I did not look at the puppy cause
I dont have any pups. However the Nutro Chicken and Rice has some ingredients
that I would prefer to stay away from.
I dont see much point in having rice bran, rice flour, egg product, or dried
kelp in my girls food. So I guess I'll keep on with the Innova and Ca Natural.
Thanks for letting me know which Nutro you prefer.

You're not going to find a better kibble than Cal. Natural
or Innova. If you supplement that with RMBs a few times a
week and some bland table scraps you'll have a healthy,
happy dog :)

I have a couple questions for CA users. My golden retriever has been on CA for about a month. Do you feel the food should be supplemented with something? Why and with what. Also the last couple days her stools have been soft (no fun with a long haired dog) -
could this be related to her CA diet? (I hope not) Thanks.....Liz

CA Natural does not have to be supplemented to be a complete
diet, but if I were feeding it to my dog I'd add flax seed
oil, just to be sure he's getting enough omega3s.

If your dog has been on CA Natural for a month and has just
gotten soft stools in the last couple of days, it's not
likely to be because of the change in diet. Has she had any
stress or eaten any non-edibles?

Try putting a few tablespoons of pumpkin in her food.
Libby's sells a canned pumpkin that's only pumpkin -- no
sugar, no spices, no nothing, just pumpkin. Pumpkin is a
fabulous and nutritious source of fiber.
Also... sometimes stools are soft, it's not a big deal
unless it lasts more than a few days, then I'd go for a
check up, just to be sure everything's OK.

I dont have to supplement anything my girls diet, however I do give them some
green beans and chicken a few times a week. They also get carrotts and apples
as treats as well as the California Natural treats. I doubt that your dogs
loose stool is a result of the California Natural seeing as she has already
been on it for a month. Just my opinion though.
Thanks,
Keri
