A friend of mine got a puppy last summer who was diagnosed with
parvo. Apparently, if they aren't diagnosed within 3-4 days of
symtoms, they aren't likely to make it. Her puppy was diagnosed on day
3, had a rough ride, but made it. She knows it was very close.
Good luck with yours. I hope they caught it in time.

I have a parvo survivor.... Newman www.irish-wolfhounds.com/Newman.html
IF the disease is caught early, and if the dog is able to be kept hydrated,
if the care is properly diligent, and if you are very lucky.......
Good luck.

Check the "Update on Steve"
I came home on a Sat at 4:00 pm with a 6 month old Rott. On the Sunday night he started to get really sick. Onthe Monday I took him back to the pound for observation and at the same time called my Vet. He said if I had any intentions of saving this dog I should bring him in right away. On Tues. morning, I brought him to my Vet where it was confirmed he had Parvo. They couldn't tell me if he would survive or not - said alot depended on the dog. Anyway he already broke my heart and I didn't know this dog. He stayed one week at the vet on intravenos. When it was time to start feeding him, I made his food and fed him by hand with my steralized gown on. My vet made me visit as often as I could since alot depended on the dog. That was 2.5 yrs ago. Today he is a beautiful 115 lbs. been through obedience, some protection, agility and even got his C.G.C. award plus won a march-o-thon for cancer and won a year's supply of dog food - we donated that to the pound. He has survived parvo, kennel cough, fleas, a few yeast infections, and now we are keeping our fingers crossed on his partially ruptured knee. Do I have any regrets? None at all, he has been the best dog I ever had. Is that story successful enough for you? I wish you the best of luck. Hope you will be as lucky as I was and get paid back each day of your dogs life. My Rott is just so grateful and a real angel. The very best to you and your dog. Regards,
Maureen

I adopted an 8-week old lab mix from the pound last Saturday. The puppy
began to act sick on Sunday. Became very ill yesterday. Vet confirmed
parvo this morning. The puppy's condition is guarded. Has anyone else
been through this? How did it turn out? I'm just sick about this poor
little baby.

That vet bill is quite high. My vet charged me $115.00 for the week, guess
I was really lucky. I am really glad the pup is getting better. He will
reward you for sure. Keep us posted and have a nice day.

Most vets will accept partial payments. I know how you feel, the bills can go pretty
high sometimes and we also have to trust their judgement. Is there anyway you can go
and visit the dog bring him some TLC and comfort. I only knew my dog a day and I am
sure my visits gave him the will to live. As a matter of fact, the vet told me with
parvo alot depends on the dog. They said we can give all the correct medications but
if the dog doesn't want to live, that is another problem. This is only my story but I
sure am aching with yours. The wait is so long. Please keep us posted and our hearts
are with you right now. Regards,
Maureen

Bucky is out of the woods. As of this morning, he finally has some white
bloodcells, has finally gotten a fever, is eating and drinking. He needs to stay
in the hospital until Monday, to make sure he makes a full recovery. I am sooooo
relieved. My vet has been absolutely marvelous. He has called me twice a day with
updates and given me lots of encouragement along the way. Now I have the bill to
overcome.....

There was no way we could afford to treat a parvo pup. She died after about
a week of home care.

I'm so sorry about your puppy. That must have been heartbreaking for you. When
I first brought Bucky to the hospital, the vet quoted me $700 based on a 5-day
stay. Buck's been in for a week, so I guestimate it'll probably be close to
$1k. Luckily, I've been stashing money that was intended for a vacation and
it'll almost cover the bill.

Couldn't agree more !!!
I know for my Rudy, now 8, who was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis
last Feb., it made a HUGE difference. In the past, I had never been told I
couldn't visit, but had always thought that a couple of nights at the vet,
without me visiting, was better than letting him see me and thinking he was
coming home.
But I knew Rudy was VERY sick this time, and there was no way I wasn't
going to spend as much time as possible with him. (I even took him by my
church and had the Reverend bless him for me, on the way to the vets. <G>)
I went in every day for 2-4 hours a day, and sat inside the kennel with
Rudy's head on my lap, or cuddled up somehow on me. I took him out for his
walks, and was there as much as I could be. They told me, AFTER I took him
home, 8 days later, that they really didn't think he was going to make it,
many of the first few nights.
I believe that me being there, letting him know that I didn't forget
him, that I was still his 'mom', and loved him just as much as ever, made
the difference. Even tho I know animals aren't ppl, how would any of us feel
if we were really sick, and NEVER had anyone come to the hospital or call?
And here he was, in a strange place, (new vets), without a clue as to where
I was, on top of feeling very very ill.
I didn't want him to think I didn't care. I KNOW he knew that. I have
two other dogs, and love them dearly, but what Rudy and I have is very
special, and I wanted to be there, and let him know that, no matter what.
He's been fine since then, with a careful eye on his diet, but I will
NEVER let my dogs do an extended stay without visiting, again.

I guess you're right. A 9-week old puppy probably doesn't really "think" about
things like being clean. What size crate? A really small one where he can
basically just turn around, or a larger one that he will grow into? I've never
done this. Also, do I crate him around the clock or do I crate him when I can't
supervise him? He used his puppy pee pad this morning, which was exciting.
But I'm so confused. Help!!
