/We have a Lhaso-Shitzu mix with really dry skin. Live in Arizona and the
vet doesn't have any more suggestions. Anybody? Kate

Thanks for responding so fast! The vet said to use mineral oil or raw eggs.
The groomer gave us some spray, but all it does is make his coat oily. How
about wheat germ? Kate

What part of your dog's skin is most affected (all over, his ears, his
feet)?

I'd first try adding a fatty acid supplement to his food. There are
several on the market (e.g., DermCaps, Dream Coat, Linatone, Lipiderm,
Veterinarian's Best) in either liquid or capsule formulation, depending
on what's easiest for you and what your dog will accept. (For example,
I have a picky eater, and the only liquid he tolerates is the Vet's
Best.)

Some coat sprays will make the coat oily, and some are best used as an
after-bath conditioner. (HyLyf EFA makes a great after-bath spray.) For
daily use, I'd look at the Veterinarian's Best moisturizing coat
conditioner. Very light, extremely low scent (one of my dogs can't
stand anything perfumey, and I can't say as I blame him), and won't
leave the coat oily.

Am not sure why your vet might have recommended mineral oil.

Hi Tracy. This is my mothers dog and she's never owned one before. I don't
know why the vet recommended the oil. It just gave my retriever the runs.
:-) It's been awhile since I lost my baby, but I don't know why I didn't
think of the Linitone and stuff. Thanks for reminding me. Kate

Me neither! I thought mineral oil was a laxative? Read here:

fat soluble vitamins OUT of the body.........very weird.

One of the worlds most well known vets in the area of skin is located in
Tucson. Real nice guy named Lowell Ackerman. He wrote the book on skin
disorders, literally.

I think my other post got lost in the ozone, but the reason the ;mineral oil
gave your dog the runs is because its a laxative! Perhaps your mom
misunderstood the vet? Turns out, mineral oil takes all the oil soluble
vitamins OUT of the dog - so not only do you have a dog with diarrhea, but
the problem gets worse..........

Let me just offer this, based on years of dealing with dog owners........
what they heard is not necessarily what the vet said. Someone could easily
have heard "oil" and somehow extrapolated "mineral oil" from that. Not too
big a stretch at all.

My cocker spaniel has had a problem with dry skin and some of it is due
to allergies. We actually lived in Arizona for several years. That is
where the dog is originally from. I was told to help dry, flaky skin to add
a tablespoon a vegetable oil to his food. It did seem to work. You kind
have to figure out on your own if one tablespoon is too much for your pet or
not. If it is too much it can cause loose stool or the runs. But I have
not had a problem. The vet I used to go to was Crosswinds Animal Clinic in
Gilbert , on Gilbert and Baseline I believe, Dr. Roach. She is an absolute
wonderful vet, I will never find another one like her.

My vet, recommended 3V Caps Liquid to squirt on my dog's food, it contains:
fish il, Omega 3 polyunsturates plust Vitamins A,D & E. I also try to buy
tuna fish packed in oil and squeeze out the oil on her food, when I use the
tuna.
For her coat I use the most gentle dog shampoo, listed for puppies,
rinsing really well and just try to brush her more often with a gentle
brush.

Salmon oil capsules are inexpensive and have high levels of fatty acids and
another option.
