We have recently adopted a Siberian Husky named Jasmine (pictures
attached). She is a great dog (very intelligent yet highly disobedient).
She is having skin problems that worry us a little. We first noticed
that she had dry skin on her belly about a week ago and weren't all that
concerned ( we thought it would go away). But it now appears to have
spread to the rest of her body. She has dry flaky skin everywhere. A few
days before we noticed the problem on the rest of her body, we noticed
that there where big gobs of hair lying around the house. When we
examined her we found bald patches forming on her upper/outer front
legs. She has two distinct types of hair; a very fine dense under-coat,
and a courser less dense guard-coat. It is the dense under-coat that is
falling out rather than the guard-coat. She has also been nibbling at
her front and back legs quite a bit. The vet thinks that the dry skin is
making the hair fall out, and recommended giving her cod-liver oil on a
daily basis. She didn't think it was a parasite as the skin in the bare
patches isn't red or inflamed. Also, she thought that if it was a
parasite both types of hair would be falling out rather than just the
finer under-coat. So, these are her credentials…
Jasmine the dog:
- 14 months old.
- 27 lb.
- lost of exercise
- inside/outside (prefers down comforter on futon to blanket in
doghouse).
- she eats Nutro - high energy dry food, various brands of treats for
training, and those ground up raw hide sticks when she is extra good.
Can anyone help? Does anyone have any suggestions/comments? Thanks for
your time.

The thing that has bothered me the most about your post is the weight of the
dog. 27 pounds for a 14 month old female is extremely light! Normally,
females will average 40 to 45 pounds or a bit lighter such as 35 or so, but
27!
What is her height at the shoulder?

Alot of siberians will itch, dig, chew themselves/fur during the hairblow stage
- its due to the hormone rise to make the hair blow.
Get a good comb/dog rake and give a daily brushing if not twice a day. You can
also give them extra omega's during this time. IE, dermcaps, efacaps, missing
link.
We have 36 siberians here and the fur really flies every few months.

PS what do you do with 36 siberians?
When they start to blow coat, the skin will flake. Ours normally start shedding
on the rear legs or the front legs first. And several of ours do not shed -
but rather - HUNK it all out in a couple days....handfulls are not uncommon.
The new hair will come in super soft, shiny and rather fast.
