This almost seems like a repeat performance in disappointment. Last year,
from the identical pedigree, a grand daughter of the Norfolk Terrier Ch
Zebedee Trust and Obey was diagnosed with patellar luxation -- which
resulted in our writing the article Luxating Patella in Norfolk and Norwich
Terriers. His daughter was checked and did not have patellar luxation,
however.
About 2 weeks ago we learned we have now, from the same identical pedigree,
produced a puppy "Schatzy" with hip dysplasia. Then, upon examining
Schatzy's mother, "Rowdy", we learned Rowdy also has hip dysplasia. This was
immediately announced on the newsgroups and the International Clubs' Email
List prevent further mishaps. Below is the pedigree of "Schatzy", which of
course also contains the pedigree of her dam "Rowdy", and the pedigree of
her grand sire Ch Zebedee Trust and Obey.
You may have seen pictures of Rowdy in the Norfolk Terrier Breed FAQ
(maintained at the web site of the highly estimable Cindy Tittle Moore who
has put uncountable hours in towards providing information about, and
improving the health of dogs and dog breeds in general). Rowdy is Int. Ch.
Sirius Southern Comfort, and is a real "looker". Rowdy is also an excellent
companion. She will be spayed and continue to live out the rest her life
with us as the house dog she has become accustomed to being these many years
she has been with us.
We have already notified the owners of the other progeny of Rowdy that could
possibly be bred to check on this and so far the checks for these other dogs
are okay. As we learn more and as time permits we will probably update this
report.
We feel this is ***very significant**** for Norfolks as a breed as what some
people would call "a much-used stud", ****Ch Zebedee Trust and Obey****, is
Rowdy's sire.
We are NOT and NEVER HAVE said this occurrence of hip dysplasia was the
fault of the dam's stud Ch Zebedee Trust and Obey . This is NOT an exercise
in blame assessment; it IS the practice of candor in dog breeding aimed at
preventing mishaps by others and improving the breed through the sharing of
knowledge.
However as Ch Zebedee Trust and Obey has a LOT more progeny (maybe hundreds
for all we know) than his daughter, "Rowdy", it would make sense for
breeders to keep an eye out in the breed for this in the progeny,
grand-progeny, etc. of Ch Zebedee Trust and Obey.
It is in fact no one's fault. As it is said, "Defects are going to occur in
any species and many of them will appear quite out of the blue with no
warnings or previous clues to the fact that this defect was 'in the line'."
In fact, if all the Norfolk breeders who have ever bred a Norfolk prior to
checking it for hips, eyes, knees, ... continue to list all the items that
showed up in the 1995 NNTC Health survey... namely...

.... were to stop breeding then there would be no more Norfolks born.
In short, let him with out fault cast the first stone; regarding the
occurrence of hip dysplasia in a daughter and grand daughter of the Norfolk
Terrier Ch Zebedee Trust and Obey there simply is no fault to place.
However, there IS fault to place regarding the attempt by someone to attempt
to suppress this knowledge:
After our post to newsgroups and the International Clubs' Email List ,
Marilynn Bubb, the Secretary of Norwich Terrier Club International who of
course subscribes to the International Clubs' Email List asked and received
our permission to forward a synopsis of the information to a group of other
breeders of Norfolk and Norwich Terriers she exchanges email with.
After she forwarded the synopsis, a FAX was received (we are told it was
apparently from the Wallworks but do not know this for a fact), by the
President of the University of Arizona State University where Marilynn Bubb
sent her email from. This FAX complained Mrs. Bubb had used ASU facilities
to defame and libel Melanie Wallwork, the owner of Ch Zebedee Trust and Obey
.
IF the FAX should ever in fact prove to have been sent from her then we feel
this would be a very sad inditement for Melanie Wallwork personally; we hope
this is not the case.
Our personal feeling is that this action, by whoever did send the FAX, is
one of trying to suppress knowledge, candor, and truth by someone with some
sort of interest in Norfolk Terriers . This person, whoever they are, and
those that support the action of sending that FAX, are the only people we
would be able to fault in this entire situation.
"Every breeder will produce defects if he breeds long enough. Those who tell
you that they do not produce defects have either stopped breeding, breed
hardly at all or are being economical with the truth. Defects are going to
occur in any species and many of them will appear quite out of the blue with
no warnings or previous clues to the fact that this defect was 'in the
line'. There is no crime in producing a defect. Crime, if any, lies in what
you do about a defect. If you bury yours quickly and keep quiet about it and
I do the same with mine then, sooner or later ... the penalty for not having
been honest ... [will be paid by] the bred we probably profess to love. We
must collaborate .... in collecting information so that we can all know as
much as is possible about the status quo in the breed. " --Practical
