A couple of my dog's nails have turned black and I'm not sure why. I
am afraid to clip his nails because I can't see where the "pink" area
is. He is my first dog, so I haven't had any experience with this.
Why did they turn black and how should I now clip those nails?

Thanks, Julie Thompson

Take your dog to the Vet as soon as you can for the nails to be taken
care of. This condition can be painful and also lead to deformities of
the feet.

This happens with some puppies. You just trim the part of the nail with
no 'pith' in it. I usually turn a dog's foot up like a horse hoof and
check to see how far to trim. You could always just nip off as much (or
a little less0 than you do on the white nails.

My dog's nails are black, and my vet told me that's just the kind of nails
that they are (dog is husky/shepherd mix) and he also told me I don't need to
cut them. As long as the dog is getting plenty of exercise, the walking,
particularly on sidewalks, is supposed to help keep the nails to the right
length.

Color is irrelevant, but as far as not needing to clip his
nails, that all depends on the structure of the dog's foot. If
he has a nice, tight foot, and stands up on his toes, no amount
of walking on sidewalks will grind down his nails. In fact, in
order for them to reach the sidewalk they have to be so long
they are curling.

How do I know this? Simple, I live in New York City, and almost
all the walking my Dobe gets (or any of the Dobes I've had in
the past 26 years) is on sidewalks (approximately 2 miles per
day) and they've needed their nails clipped as regularly as the
ones I had the 20-odd years previously when backyards and other
non-concrete "flooring" was available.

Wrong. And please be careful about posting such strong and urgent advice about veterinary medicine as you are. It is not something painful nor an emergency of sorts. Ive been a certified tech for 17 yrs. If you dont have the credentials, then please dont give un-warranted advice. Thanks, from the veterinary community. :)

I don't cut my dog's nails any more. I clipped one too short before and it turned black. I use the electric nail file for dog's and it's easier for both of us. Don't spend too much time on each nail because the friction burns. It also dulls the edges, so they don't scratch people.

A nail turning black isn't a condition. It's just growing up. They may not even need cutting ever. Most active dogs don't need it.
