I presently use Pedigree Chicken & Rice dry dog food but, the formula has
been changed and my dogs don't like it. While kennelled a couple of
weeks ago, they were fed Sportsman's Choice dry and really liked it. Has
anyone used this and what is your opinion of it? Thanks.

I have switched over to Sportsmen's Choice Professional Formula within
the past 6 months. I have been *quite* impressed with the coat and
condition it put on my dogs. Jasper was always rather thin, with a coat
which was a bit rough, had some dandruff, and seemed to itch him. The
Sportsmen's Choice is *very* high fat, and it was recommended to me by a
breeder who has finished many, many champions. I could tell a difference
in coat within a week and a half. Three months later Jasper has gained
13 much needed pounds, and positively glimmers. He no longer itches at
all. I've cut the food down to a scant 4 cups a day to keep him from
gaining more, but I really like it.

The foods I had tried in the past included (all for fairly long
periods), Healthy Harvest, Sensible Choice, Nature's Recipe, Science
Diet, Iams, and Wayne Lamb and Rice.

Would you please let me know where Sportsman's Choice is available?
I'd be very interested in trying it. My GSD just developed a terrible
case of dandruff. No itching but those white flecks look terrible on
his solid black coat. Since he's now a house dog the heated house may
have dried out his coat during the winter. I also wonder if you could
give me a suggestion for a good shampoo that would help. I've heard
about using Murphy's Oil soap and wonder if this would be a good
choice?

Thank you,
Dawn

I have used Sportsman's Choice Professional Formula on my
dogs for about 4 years now and have never been happier !!
I switched over from those "higher price premium foods"
and found my dogs had even NICER coats and firmer stools.

Just my $.02......YMMV !!

Well it's not "Sportman's Choice" but it is the choice of
many "Sportsmen/women". Check out the Martins K-9 Formula
Dog Food WWW page at:

I believe the first two ingredients on the Sportsmen's Choice Professional Formula
are chicken and corn. It has no ethoxyquin and no soy. The dogs' stools are still
quite solid and infrequent.

This food is available at Sam's Clubs only (AFAIK). In my area it's $16.99 for
50#. It only comes in the one size.

To tell the truth I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I feed this food, given the
current trend towards "more expensive is better". But I've fed the more expensive,
and it *isn't* better.

They also have a "lamb and rice" formula called Exceed. Unlike many of the
premium brands, the first two ingredients of the lamb and rice formula
actually are lamb and rice. I spent a lot of time reading labels and finally
moved all my dogs to this food. Main drawback - I haven't seen it anywhere
except at the Sam's club.

Someone on one of the mailing lists I'm on mentioned that Sportsmen's Choice
has a "clone" food called "Maxximum Performance" which is available at
Walmart. It's a bit more expensive--$16.49 for 40 lb.--but still far less
expensive than the so-called premium brands. It's also available in several
different sized bags. I switched my crew over to it and have seen their dry,
flakey skin dramatically inprove. All three girls have velvety soft coats
and they positively gleam with good health.

If Sportsman's Choice premium brand is so high in fat, is it good
for my dog's health? I know it's good for her coat.

If she doesn't have bouts of diarrhea, or doesn't gain a lot of weight
and become obese from all of the fat, go ahead and feed it. Fat has 3
times the calories as carbohydrates, most house dogs don't need all of
those calories. High protein, high fat diets are great for working
dogs who burn a lot of calories, but calories from protein produces
nitrogen which is bad for the kidneys over time, and calories from fat
is too many calories for many inactive, neutered pets.

I get it in Nuevo Vallarta Sam's Club, but they also have it at the Puerto Vallarta store. Hope this helps.
