My veterenarian accidentally gave my 1 yr old labrador retriever two
rabies vaccines 4 months apart. They are each supposed to be good for 2
years.
Is this dangerous for my dog ?

Please reply to pau...@Merck.com or to this newsgroup.

Thank you.

I used to work in quality control for the veterinary biological
company Pitman-Moore, and before release, we tested all
vaccines for safety at 10 times the recommended dose. So your
dog should be fine.

My veterenarian accidentally gave my 1 yr old labrador retriever a
second rabies vaccine (good for 2 years) four months apart. The first one in
January and the second one just the other day. I called his office and they
said it wasn't dangerous. I just wanted some other opinions.

Thank you,
Rich Paugh

Probably not, if your dog is otherwise in good health. The worst is
probably over with. If he's doing okay now, he'll probably remain
okay.

PS: Get a new vet. Fast.

The answer is no, but didn't your vet already tell you that???
Hope you didn't have to pay for the second shot, and how come he's
getting shots without you knowing about it??

Rich:

Given where you work, you can probably run this past some of the vets who work for
the company, and you still get the same answer:

Nah, it won't hurt him at all. If he had gotten bitten by an animal that was
suspected of, or known to be, rabid, you'd have to booster him again since that's
the standard protocol. The rabies vaccine is a "killed" vaccine--meaning that there
is no live virus contained in the product.

As for the duration of the immunity, the same vaccine is used for the intial
vaccination and the booster vaccinations. The difference in the length of time the
shot is considered to be protective for is based on the amount of immune response
that occurs the first time the dog's system sees the killed virus and subsequent
exposures to the vaccine. The vaccine your dog just got would probably be
considered to be valid for three years if you lived in an area where there was no
recent history of rabies; in areas where there have been recent outbreaks, they
reduce the booster interval to two years to ensure that everyone's pets have a good
titer against the disease.

Um...Joe?

{taking a deep breath}

If the vet hasn't done anything else which shakes this guy's faith in him,
wouldn't you be willing to forgive such a minor error? After all, many vets don't
draw up the vaccines themselves--their technicians prep the syringes for them, and
lay them out in the exam room as the client is entering with the pet. And granted,
there's supposed to be a system that prevents this kind of mix-up, but since the dog
was vaxed in January of this year, isn't it possible that someone accidently marked
this dog as having been done in Jan. of 199_5_ instead of 199_6_, a result of that
common post-New Year dyslexia?

I realize that some vets--and most human medical pratitioners--project an air of
divinity, but the majority of the vets I've run into are willing to accept that they
are mere mortals, and as such do occassionally make mistakes.

Or are you of the feeling that this vet is "a thing....cocked at an arrogant angle"?

Yes, Phyllis?

Why are you holding your breath, Phyllis? Heh, heh, heh.

I think any vet that can't keep track of innoculations probably can't
keep tract of other things, like when he last ordered fresh vaccine,
etc.

Your vet is RESPONSIBLE for everything that happens in his/her office,
eh? Are you trying to find yet another way for people to keep from
having any personal responsibility? Captains are responsible for
their ships and everyone on them. Period.

Sure it is. Anything's possible. But I would never give this vet
another chance to have any more "mix-ups." Just call me mean, eh?

You bet. And they should expect to suffer the consequences for making
mistakes and should not expect people to overlook them.

>Or are you of the feeling that this vet is "a thing....cocked at an arrogant angle"?

I think most vets are absolutely wonderful people and I couldn't get
by without them. However, there are also a number of them that I
wouldn't allow to even touch my dogs.

Nope, not in my book, Phyllis. You can take a breath now, eh? Heh,
heh, heh.

I would give this vet a chance. He/She was honest and reported what happened. A dishonest vet would have ignored the issue or try to cover it up.
