I see dogs are quite a bit more now. I almost bought one years ago for 350
(best guess is a decade ago) What is a reasonable price for one, and how can
I find one? I've been looking at the local paper on the internet from time
to time, but never see any chows.

Am I wrong in thinking that since I am one of those in the 6% w/o a job now
that this is a good time to get one? I think it would be much worse to try
to train one when I am gone from 6am - 5pm. Pretty harsh for a puppy if it's
alone. (but what do I know)

Finally, what should I expect for training a dog, At what age should you
start taking him to lessons, and how much does that cost????

Thanks, Paul

Paul,

I am wondering if you would consider a chow mix from a shelter. Petfinder
always has bunches of them. I got Zoe, a cocker spaniel/chow cross, when
she was 12 weeks old from our local shelter. She has a lot of that chow
independence and a lot of cocker playfulness, and a gorgeous longish
black coat. And the very excellent chow fastidiousness, which meant she
was already housetrained at 12 weeks old! But I digress. The point is
there are many chows and chow mixes in shelters, and rescuing one might
be just the ticket for you.

My parents have a Chow/Retriever mix and it is the sweetest, mellowest dog.
Still hates kids like most Chows though. $500-1000 for purebreed.

My brother in law has a 2 ½ year old Chow x Shepherd from a shelter.
That dog is now a darn good SAR dog, loves kids, and aside from
shedding, is an ideal pet.

My cocker/chow cross, Zoe, loves kids and feels she has a personal mandate
to greet each one of them individually and enthusiastically.

What's an SAR dog?

Zoe needs to be brushed a minimum of 3 times per week. More often is even
better. I find she doesn't shed in the sense of losing hair all over the
house -- but she gets easily matted if I don't brush the dead hair out of
her coat. So yes, she takes a lot of grooming, but she doesn't shed around
the house as much as the cat does.

Search and Rescue. And he's also passed the TDI test and is a certified
therapy dog.

I'd love to see a chow sharpei, or maybe a chow Samoyed ( I think this would
be a real pretty dog )
