Help! I' ve been "elected" to come up with some "games" for dogs at our
local German Shepherd Club picnic. Thought it would be easy but I not
doing well so far. I would like to avoid anything at all similar to AKC
obedience, as this would give an unfair advantage to dogs that compete
here. Anybody got any good ideas?

Thanks,
Dennis E. Faugh

P.S. Please post responses, as my e- mail is currently eratic.

The local vizsla club had a pooper-scooper relay at their last
fun day. I didn't
attend, but I believe this is the way it works: there are teams of
four handlers, each with a dog on lead. They have to run in a
relay series, carrying one of those full-size pooper-scoopers
with two hard-boiled eggs in
it in one hand, while
managing the dog on lead and not dropping the eggs. It is
pretty funny to watch, and nobody gets too competitive about
winning.

Hi, This is my first attempt at posting so I apologize in advance if i'm
doing it wrong. As for games...at my dogs last birthday party we had
"races" in which holders held the dogs with one hand and had a hot dog in
their other hand... the owners were about 50' away across the yard and on
a signal called their dogs to them while the holders gave the dogs
the entire hot dog...the dog that had the most hot dog left when it got to
it's owner won. We also did bobbing for rawhide treats. Have fun,

Last Easter, we had an Easter *T*R*E*A*T* hunt for hte dogs.
(My mother is right; it's time for a least one new baby in our family)

My nephews "hid" treats in the back yard, and the dogs had a hunt.
It was pretty fun to watch. the dogs figured out what was going on
after a little help.

Hi!

Our Newfoundland club just had its picnic and here are some of the events:

Longest tongue
Best "kisser" (gotta have a judge that doesn't mind getting wet)
Best tail wagger
these 3 need judges

Biggest chow hound: each dog has a plate with 4-5 treats; at "go" the
handlers let the dogs eat the treats; the first to finish wins (this works
best if you post someone at each plate to raise their hand when the dog
takes the last treat in its mouth). If you have lots of dogs, do it in
"heats" of 7-8 dogs/heat, then let the top 2 or 3 from each heat compete in
a final round.

Hot dog toss: throw hot dog; if dog catches it, back up; dog that can catch
from the farthest distance wins (similar to an "egg toss)

"tunnel of terror" recall: lots of distractions (food, rolling tennis
balls, etc) as dog is doing recall.

Team relay consisting of: eat a treat, sit, say "woof", heel around a
bucket, catch a ball, lie down, underwater retrieve, water retrieve, carry a
stick, tow a (toy) boat, pull a (toy) cart, sack "race" (handler in sack,
not the dog).
The relay team divvies up the tasks among the dogs based on what the dogs do
best. The first dog and handler run across to the line (about 10-15yds
away), perform their task, then run back; the next dog and handler go, etc.
It's a lot of fun and doesn't require knowledge of obedience for most dogs
(most of our competitors this year were puppies).

If you want more details
on these, e-mail me and I'll try to explain them.

Have fun!

Sharon

They local (Raleigh) parks department puts on an event called Bark in the Park
and they have games like dog-owner look alike contests, smallest dog, largest
dog, an easy agility course for everyone to try, a vet who checked canine
teeth, and a two mile run. You might be able to use some of those ideas.

My dog club does a musical chairs type game. However, we use towels
and the dogs do a down on the towel. Just be careful with Alpha dogs
who really want to win.

Good luck,

Some games my club has used at picnics include:

Bobbing for dog bones (float dog bones in a pail of water
and they have to bob for them)

Tic-Tac-Drop: 2 teams: get an X or O if the team can drop their
dogs in the approprite spot on a tic/tac/toe board drawn
on the floor/grass

Relay games: have teams where they have to run to X spot and
call their dog (or heel their dog) and when the dog sits
the next member starts. ofcourse if your dog breaks the
sit on the recall - they have to go back.....

Retrieve the weenie.... whooever brings back the hotdog wins.

musical chairs but we use hulahoops and you have to stop in a hoop to be
in a chair. There's one less hoop than # of dog/handlers

There is a book out about dog games and I think I have it at home.

One of the games we play is "hot dog bob". Fill a bucket half way with
water . Show the hot dog to the dog and drop it in the bucket. The hot
dog will sink and the dog has to reach in under the water to "bob" for the
hot dog. The fastest dog wins (our prize is a whole package of hot dogs).
A stop watch is needed or at least a watch with a second hand.

Censorship of dog games?!!?

Oh, well...if no one else decides to, I'm willing to archive these
at my Web site. Just post them here or e-mail them to me.

At our Doberman picnic we have had dress-up contests,
ice-cream eating contests (or frozen yogourt if we're
going to be healthy and boring!), and photo contests
(suggest selecting categories, eg. biggest ears,
silliest pose, etc. in advance, not telling people what
the categories are, and having everyone vote). Have
fun!

How about an agility-type course? One where the obstacles aren't so much
agility based as fun for on-lead competition, like standing/sitting in a
childs swimming pool, breaking water balloons, jumping over hay bales,
balance beams, cookies or balls under buckets, etc. The most obstacles
completed wins, the best time breaks the tie.

I also like the idea of a talent contest and a costume contest. Sounds
like fun, fun, fun!

I've always been partial to bobbing for weenies. The most weenies eaten
out of a tub of water in a set period of time win. Susan Ablon :-)

How about "find the hot dog"? a hot dog is cut into six pieces, the person
and dog (on a flexi) stand in the middle of a circle of hot dog pieces
(spaced out depending upon the size of the dog--a circle maybe 10-15 ft in
diameter) and using voice only, "encourages" the dog to find all the
pieces!

It's a hoot....

Hi. At dog picnics I've been to, the following were popular events.
* Musical sits and downs (like musical chairs, but last dog to sit is
out).
* Hot dog maze - sliced hot dogs dangling from strings with dog heeling
through the maze without nibbling.
* Egg race: dog heeling while its human carries an uncooked egg on a spoon
around an obstacle course (tires, etc.)
* Canine massage clinic - this is a nice one for a quiet time out from the
more active games, it presumes you can find someone to explain the whys
and hows of giving your dog a massage (great for bonding and preventative
maintenance).

Hope your picnic is a blast for the dogs and their friends.

There are also Pedigree Services that have these Studbooks and do
pedigrees. Many of them charge less than AKC, provide more generations
and include foreign titles (AKC does not).
