A few days ago, I emailed someone about their puppy
selection. They answered, and in doing so mentioned that
they had found a puppy from an "AKC recommended" breeder.

I think that these people had just mixed up AKC registration
with AKC recommendation, but just in case the breeder is
actually telling prospective buyers that they're "AKC
recommended", I thought I'd mention this.

The American Kennel Club exists to register DOGS. The
organization does not register or recommend breeders. When a
dog is AKC registered, this means that the breeder
represented the puppy to the AKC as being the offspring of
AKC dogs of the same breed. Nothing more. There is no
guarantee of quality. Many badly bred, sickly, vicious,
fearful or aggressive dogs are AKC registered.

The Canadian Kennel Club does register breeders, but does
not recommend one over the other. It also does not test or
guarantee dogs.

As an aside, in Canada it is a contravention of the Animal
Pedigree Act to advertise or sell an unregistered (or
unregistrable) dog as a purebred. The dog must be registered
under a breed or kennel club incorporated under the Act, or
a recognized foreign breed or kennel club (such as AKC).

DMV registers cars. AKC registers dogs. Neither claims that registration
says anything about quality.

No one would buy a used car just because it is registered with DMV. That
doesn't quarantee the transmission won't fall out! Someone who would want
a mechanical inspection of a used car can be all to willing to buy a puppy
just because it is AKC registered!

Charlene -
Do you know the AKC has a 900 number that you can call for breeder
referral? They give out the list of their Gazette advertisers (I believe)
and also the breed club's breeder referral person. I can see where a person
from the Gazette listing or the breed club's referral list could be
misconstrued as a AKC recommended breeder.

Uh, sorry, but they sort of do. Just call 1-900-407-PUPS*, tell them what
breed you are looking for and your geographic area and you will be
provided with the name and phone number of a breeder referral
representative who works with dog clubs and breeders in that area. That
person will then give you a list of the breeders of that particular breed
that are close to you.

While this is not exactly recommending breeders, I can see how people
would say that they found their breeder through an AKC recommendation.
