Just got off the phone with the vet. All went well. Moogli is awake and is
relaxing at the vet. We can pick him up tomorrow morning. Chances are he
will be starving as he won't have eaten since Monday night. Time to drop by
the PetSmart and pick up a little toy for him.

Thanks for all the good words.

C'ya tomorrow!!

Yay for Moogli!

I just heard from the vet as well. Wylie came through surgery fine and is
waking up, so I get to pick him up in a few hours. If he didn't have 4,387
toys already, I'd go buy him one. Aw, who am I kidding. More toys!!

YAY, Wylie and Moogli as well as the relieved parents. So, how many
times did you each call the vet?

Oh my god! he called you every ten minutes? Can I have the name of your
vet? Mine just lets me stay there, because I drive the office staff nuts
ringing the phone off the wall. Allowing me to BE there, is easier on
everybody.
A couple weeks I did leave Reka at the vets for a half day. I vowed NOT
to pester them, and didn't. I vacuumed, and vacuumed as if I was trying
to erase the carpets. When I picked her up, the staff gave me a box of
donuts and a clicker as a reward for not calling them.

LOL. Now that is how I would be. Well I have left Blade

Then the Vet called me after it was complete.

That is funny! I never call to check up because I am always expecting the
worst possible news and I don't want to hear it. When the phone rings, I
have to sit down first to answer it. If they allow me to visit, I just stay
there and rearrange their stuff to keep busy.

Oh, but when I'm there, I'm VERY good. I then have my impulse control
under leash. No high anxiety, because I KNOW what's going on. I'm quiet
and make sure I stay out of the way. But if I'm NOT there, and they even
put me in another room, I'm VERY cranky. They decided the best behavior
control was to let me be there.
If it's Danny, he's good when I'm there. If they try to lead him away
for even a second, he plants his feet and leaves furrows in the tile
flooring. He screams, closes his eyes, shivers and becomes cement.
Totally unco-operative. But if I'm there, he let's them do anything,
unrestrained.

Ooh - you canned fish people have never had a dog with a moustache, have
you? There are things that Spenser will never get - rawhide chews and
canned fish are the first two that come to mind!

And Spenser said to tell Moogli and Wylie that now is a good time to do all
those things that you wanted to do but would have made them mad before. The
humans will forgive you anything because they feel so guilty!

If Moogli eats anything that has the slightest chance of getting sticky,
his face starts becoming a feather duster. He's not bad with rawhide, but
the green dentabone and hisbone with maple&bacon filling end up with him
getting a quick facewash with the kleenex.

I'm not THAT cruel! Spenser gets Frosty Paws. That doesn't seem to gum up
his moustache.

And sometimes some other stuff that I know is going to make a smelly beard -
but I try to schedule them for just before his bath! Otherwise, he'll have
to make a quick stop at the sink to get lathered up and rinsed and it will
take all the fun out of the treat anyway!

It's more the slime and sticky factor that is the problem. Imagine a 4 year
old eating chocolate ice cream. Can you see how much ice cream makes it
into the mouth and how much makes it onto the face? Now imagine a full
moustache and beard on the face...

I get whatever's in the grocery store, which is usually
"Polar" brand. I give each dog one mackeral every second
day, except for Greta, who gets one every day and sometimes
twice a day (she's doing poorly and eating badly, and the
mackeral is a big help with her energy levels - I think

I haven't tried it. Frankly my dogs are not fussy eaters
(except for Greta's health/age problems) and look at
everything as a huge treat. Even if they don't eat it, come
to think of it - Emmett and Duncan don't actually eat
carrots, for example, but they're really excited to be given
one.

Moogli is the same with broccoli and green (not red) peppers. IF you put
one in your hand, and tell him to take it, he will go bananas to get it,
and will then walk away from you, happily chewing on it. Until he
discovers just what he has in his mouth, at which time he will spit it
out, and stare at it for a while. I am not quite sure what the staring
is. I have narrowed it down to two possibilities. Either it is a)I gotta
start remembering what this crap looks like. or b)Come on, change into a
piece of cheese!!!

Hello MALinda,

It's a shame your dog is so fat and obese, or her energy levels might be
better. If she wasn't so obese, because of you stuffing her full of
mackeral and other snacks, she might have a few MOORE months left.

My hesitation would be the oil content. If I could get him to swallow it
without it leaving an oily residue in his beard, then it wouldn't be a
problem. Or if it's something that wipes out without involving soap and hot
water, then okay.

And you have to realize that the next step after getting something good in
your beard is to make sure you have maximum coverage on the furniture as
well!

And then he sleeps curled up between our pillows. So if there's anything
fermenting in his beard, we do notice.

Rawhide just leaves sticky bits in the beard that take forever to comb out.

Most messy things - even ice cream and such - wipe out fairly easily. I
think it's the oil that would make me nervous to try any of the canned fish.
Now tonight's haddock he can have.

It's why I don't give mackeral to the others more often than
every other day (I once heard a friend of a friend of a
friend story about someone who started feeding his dog
nothing but canned veggies and the large amount of salt in
them killed the dog - dunno if it's true but it makes me
leery about salt). In Greta's case, the mackeral makes a
clear difference in her activity and alertness levels and
I'm trying to make whatever time she's got left to be the
best possible quality. I've been looking for an alternative
fatty fish that isn't insanely expensive (no fresh salmon
for Greta, alas), but there's a downside to living in Green
Acres and this is it. I've talked to my vet about it and
she agrees with feeding her the canned stuff.

When people say such caring things like this about their elderly
friends, it just makes my heart melt.
Thanks for the lovely thoughts to Greta.

I wonder how shaving cream would work as a shampoo-squirt it in, rinse it
out with a real wet warm cloth?

I don't think there is oil in the mackeral I've bought, but I have to admit
I'd not feed it to a hairy-faced dog. The stench of the stuff is vomitous.

Okay guys. I'll TRY some mackeral for Spenser.. Just before he's due for a
bath anyway. I just figure that as much as he hates getting his face hosed
off that there are no treats in the world good enough to have to be followed
by that. Maybe if we hand-feed it it would limit the spreading through his
whiskers.

I always thought Spenser was incredibly spoiled. Now you're all making me
feel like he's terribly deprived because he doesn't get canned mackeral!

But I'm sure about the rawhide thing. The only way that comes out of a
beard is by letting it dry and then combing and pulling. I know he wouldn't
think it was worth it.

How about smelt? It's not been put in anything yucky. It's easily
available this time of year.

Gee, we haven't had smelt in years and years. DH got too old (his words,
not mine) to spend all night standing in a cold stream, drive home, clean a
garbage can full of smelt and then work all day. I seem to remember seeing
some occasionally in the grocery store frozen fish section. I'll have to
look. Smelt would work because they certainly aren't as greasy/oily.

And it's not like Spenser doesn't ever get seafood. He especially likes
walleye and pike. And scallops. We've got a wedding anniversary coming
up - I may have to try him on lobster - just in case he ever visits Maine.

But now you've got me hungry for a mess of deep fried smelt.
