He's been here for a very long time and does not go away or get bored. Once
in a while I check to see if he's still tossing my name around, which he is.
That isn't a big deal as I'm thoroughly used to it but this is the first
time he's libeled me with a total fabrication and that's not normally his
style. He generally tries to stick to things he can pull out of the
archives as "facts" (even though they rarely are but it helps to cover his
butt when he's reported). He's got plenty of facts on my past to use, as he
frequently does, but in this case what he said is actionable. Since he
keeps such excellent records on all the regulars, I find it interesting that
he's slipped in this way.

Here's a fact on you.
You murdered your easily trainable dog, Summer, out of fear and
incompetence and then you lied to your daughter about why you had to
kill her dog.
Here's some other easily trainable dogs which were murdered by another
one of our local "dog rescuers"
Hello fans,
here's a great story of someone killing a great dog:

Lynn K, kills a great dog

Exactly. A couple of years ago I evaluated a BC bitch in rescue who had
gotten in 20-25 bites on her foster family the 1st day in their home.
The problem was that there were a whole slew of people lined up who
wanted her because she was a dynamite herding dog, titled before she was
2, flashy, etc.. Most of these people were single women
[editor's note, like Melanie Lee Chang, who would
have had ZERO problems with this dog, even though
she's 1/10th the trainer Michael is]
into competitive herding who had no children or plans to have any.
Testing the dog revealed that she had a safety zone of about 3 ft and
would use her mouth to drive out anyone who came within that space
(other than whoever was holding her leash). She also would not tolerate
any entrance to her airspace. The deciding factor was that eye contact
was also a trigger and the severity of the bite increased with eye's
moved lowerer to her level. IOW, the shorter the person, the harder the
bite, and kids were shortest of all."

"I had a somewhat similar situation 2 weeks ago. I got a call from the
city pound informing me that a dog that had once been in our Humane
Society program had been picked up and was scheduled to die the next
day. After much research, I found out that the dog was never really one
of ours, but that a foster home we had briefly used, then fired, took a
litter, let most die needlessly, and this was the sole survivor. I got
the dog extended 24 hours, sent 6 interested parties to the pound to see
the dog, and ran to the pound to let them know the owner's contact info.
It turns out that they knew well who the owner was - over 20
complaints against her and the dog had been picked up twice that month.
She went to Mexico for a long vacation and left the dog in the back
yard, trusting neighbors to throw food over the fence. To make it
worse, I evaluated the dog as unsafe, and then the dog went for a kennel
worker and was declared unsafe by the pound, and only available to us.
The pound would not let the owner reclaim the dog, even if she were
available to do so. So that left me with -
- a dog with unclear legal ownership
- an unsuitable owner who wanted the dog, but couldn't have the dog
- an unadoptable dog for the general public
- a dog that couldn't go to anyone who would be able to help him
- and no foster homes or resources to take him into our rescue program.
The dog died. And I had to tell that irresponsible owner on her return
why her dog had to die."

She was fear aggressive. Period. No training of any kind on that
dog, much to the DA's chagrin because he wanted to be able to charge

There's several threads going on now in .behavior about dominance problems.
In one of them (HELP! Life or Death...) I gave the 21 management rules I

to either of those options is a rogue, unsafe, and should be destroyed.

I think its pertinent to mention that I've never had any dogs who exhibited
signs of aggression or were in any way, shape, or form resistent to whatever
"training" I did with them.
I would not feel comfortable relying on my past experience or a book to
train a dog to stop biting, snapping or growling.

:)
That makes sense in a weird sort of way. I don't
honestly think that its humanly possible to train
anyone or anything without correction. Its human
nature to say 'no' or to stop a behavior by doing
something. I used a tin can with coins to correct
Summer's bad puppy behaviors and the cold shoulder
to correct her other less desirable behaviors. I
have said 'no' so many times that I probably sound
like a broken record. Amie can attest to that
lol.
It seems to me that some people are automatically
equating the term correction with punishment. I
guess they can go hand in hand since my tin can
wasn't something Summer liked. My ignoring her
when she's misbehaving is also something she
doesn't like. Therefore it can be viewed as
punishment? And that term is 100% negative.
Maybe if more people saw it as correction and not
the total negative, they'd be less inclined to
want to be PP.
Don't know if the way I wrote that made sense, it
makes sense in my head but then again the men with
the white coats could come a'knockin at any
moment.

Yes I see and understand your point. There's no such thing as 100%
vigilence 100% of the time IMO. You could call an e-fence company to find
out if its possible to wire only your front door so that if she gets within
a certain range of that front door the collar will start working. I'd think
there would be a way to work that and it may be inexpensive to do so.
There are also items called Scat Mats that you place in front of doors or
any area you don't want your dog to proceed through. When stepping on the
mat, it gives off a vibration, something which most dogs hate. They'll stay
far away from the mats. I believe you can buy them from

you could consider installing an invisible fence just inside the fence
line so he cannot get too close. You could talk to your neighbor about
splitting the cost of whichever alternative you both find most acceptable.

I know people who have electric fences and it works very well for them. I
know people who have them and whose dogs escape and refuse to come back in.
From the details I know of all involved, I wouldn't use an e-fence on:
1. An adult dog that wasn't raised with the fence from a puppy
2. A dog with a high prey drive
3. A very stubborn dog
If I put my female out in an e-fence, the very first kid, cat, dog or
squirrel she sees would have her bolting through the barrier shock or not.
When she finally loses interest in whatever has caused her to leave and her
adrenalin has diminished, she will think rationally and realize she's not
willing to come back into the yard because she knows the shock would get
her. If you have a dog who just has to go after or up to any and everything
that walks down the street then I'd definitely not recommend one of these
systems. The people I know who it works for installed them when their dogs
were pups so they were brought up trained to it. Two of the ones I know it
didn't work for have adult adopted dogs who weren't raised with this kind of
invisible barrier.

Since he got a taste of freedom and knows he can
get out I doubt you'll be able to stop him short
of tethering him or using a more sophisticated
device like an e-fence but I wouldn't recommend
going the electronic fence route without first
doing your homework on the pros and cons of them
and understand that they are not fool-proof.

I worked with all the dogs I've had at my house but I'm also the one in
charge of all the dogs in our rescue, their behavioral issues (identifying
and working with), basic training (done in the foster home) and a host of
other things. I'm the one who gives the advice and walks the foster
volunteers through alot of things. Now I don't believe, for a second, that
I would be successful at teaching basic obedience to other dogs in a class
environment. Maybe I would but probably not. Other trainers with class
experience may think I have no clue what I'm doing because my experience has
been primarily hands-on and with only one breed.

loves to take things out of context but I thought that normally what he
says...even though totally out of context...could be found in the archives.
That's what stood out...not the shocking in and of itself as he says much
worse about me. There's never been a single word typed by me that could
even insinuate that I've ever used an e-collar. I don't think I'm phrasing
this quite right but its not a matter of me being offended...something just
struck me as being off from his normal behavior. Then again maybe he's just
refrained from total fabrication when he talks about me in the past. Dunno.

Koehler Method Of Dog
Training
by Koehler, W R
Published by HOWELL BOOK
HOUSE (0876056575,
========================================================
Here's some quotes and some methods right
outta your koehler book professor "SCRUFF SHAKE and scream "NO!" into its
face for 5
seconds:"
"The Koehler Method of Dog Training (1962). New York:
Howell Book Book House(p. 52-53)."
Hanging
"First, the trainer makes certain that the collar
and leash are more than adequate for any jerk
or strain that the dog's most frantic actions could cause. Then he starts
to work the dog deliberately and fairly to the point where the dog makes his
grab.
Before the teeth have reached their target,
the dog, weight permitting, is jerked from
the ground.
As in coping with some of the afore-mentioned problems the dog is suspended
in mid-air.
However, to let the biting dog recover
his footing while he still had the strength
to renew the attack would be cruelty.
The only justifiable course is to hold him
suspended until he has neither the strength
nor inclination to renew the fight.
When finally it is obvious that he is
physically incapable of expressing his
resentment and is lowered to the ground,
he will probably stagger loop-legged for a
few steps, vomit once or twice, and roll
over on his side.
The sight of a dog lying, thick-tongued,
on his side, is not pleasant, but do not
let it alarm you
THE REAL "HOOD"
"If your dog is a real "hood" who would
regard the foregoing types of protest as
"kid stuff" and would express his
resentment of your efforts by biting,
your problem is difficult -- and pressing.
"Professional trainers often get these
extreme problems. Nearly always the
"protest biter" is the handiwork of a
person who, by avoiding situations that
the dog might resent, has nurtured the
seeds of rebellion and then cultivated
the resultant growth with under correction.
When these people reap their inevitable
and oftentimes painful harvest, they are
ready to avail themselves of "the cruel
trainer" whose advice they may have
once rejected because it was incompatible
with the sugary droolings of mealy-
mouthed columnists, breed-ring biddies,
and dog psychologists who, by the
broken skins and broken hearts their
misinformation causes, can be proven guilty
of the greatest act of cruelty to animals
since the dawn of time.
"With more genuine compassion for the
biting dog than would ever be demonstrated
by those who are "too kind" to make a
correction and certainly with more disregard
for his safety, the professional trainer
morally feels obligated to perform a "major
operation."
"Since we are presently concerned with
the dog that bites in resentment of the
demands of training, we will set our
example in that situation. (In a later
chapter we will deal with the with the
much easier problem of the dog that
bites someone other than his master."

Okay - this is going to be a bit loooong - Lynn K.
"Put a prong collar with a six-foot leash on the dog. Don't
forget to put the muzzle on the dog. I think a prong works
better than a choke with less chance of injury to the dog in
this situation.
Electronics can be used to create an aversion to cats, but
should be used under the direction of a trainer who knows how
to instruct the owner in their proper use. Electronics can
take the form of shock, sonic or citronella collars. At that
time the owner will train with electronics instead of food or
whatever other reward system was being used."
8) Put a prong collar with a six-foot leash on the dog.
Don't forget to put the muzzle on the dog. I think a prong
works better than a choke with less chance of injury to the
dog in this situation. Have the dog in a sit-stay next to
you with most of the slack out of the leash and let the cat
walk through the room and up to the dog if it wishes (this is
why you have the dog muzzled). If the dog makes an
aggressive move towards the cat, it must be corrected strongly
with both your voice and the collar. This is important - the
correction must be physically very strong - not a nag. (PS:
not many dogs need to be corrected at all).

What are you talking about, you lying sack of dung?
You keep talking about some photo on "my" website related to
dogs and cats. I don't have a clue where you dreamt that up.
There IS an article about introducing dogs to cats at
www.sfgsrescue.org - hardly my website - but there are no
photos with humans at that site. And the article is clearly
attributed to the author, who isn't me. When have I ever said
anything about using a prong collar, or any collar correction
at all, to make dogs friendly to house cats? Don't bother.
The answer is never.
And I did say "I love Koehler", in reference to the passage he
wrote about the damage foggy-headed trainers like you do.
Specifically.

Okay - this is going to be a bit loooong - Lynn K.
4) Shut the dog in its crate and allow the cat(s) out
hopefully to walk past the dog crate. If the dog barks or
lunges within the crate, the dog is verbally corrected.
Make sure that the cats are in another room behind a closed
door before letting the dog have its time out of the crate.
I'm not talking about keeping the dog in the crate all the
time, it's more keeping the cats in another room most of the
time.
The dog is crated while the cats are out, and then let out of
the crate for most of the time. This may take several days or
weeks to accomplish. It depends on how quickly the cat comes
around to the dog's crate area (which should be with the
family).
5) Do not comfort, pet or fuss over the cats where the dog
can see it from his crate. Especially don't do this after the
dog has barked or lunged at the cat. Correct only the dog.
This is because you do not want the dog to see the cat as your
possession.
6) Accustom the dog to a muzzle while it is hanging out in its
crate. It will be muzzled when it goes to the vet or is
groomed (even if we don't see it, it happens), so this way the
dog is used to a muzzle. Leave it on for 10 - 15 minutes at a
time if it isn't hot. If it's hot, the dog must not be
muzzled because it can't pant. The muzzle is only a
temporary tool. But the muzzle must be used for the cat's
sake.
7) After 10-14 days where the dog does not bark or lunge at
the cat and the cat is comfortable walking around the crate,
it's show time!
Do not correct the dog for sniffing at the cat. Sniffing is
very good and is to be encouraged. Attention barking is also
okay. The dog will feel any nervousness or tension of the
owner via the leash and feed off of it, so it's important to
be calm. That's also why the muzzle
is on the dog - the owner knows the cat is safe no matter
what. Do this for about 5-10 minutes at first, then put the
dog or cat away. Try to be observant to end the session while
both dog and cat are doing well. You can spin out the time
until it's an hour or so.
9) Each time the dog first sees the cat, it gets a food
treat. Cat = a cookie. If the dog is showing too much
interest in the cat (like scenting for it), distract the dog
by giving it something else to do, like a sit or heel with
praise for doing what you've told it to do rather than
automatically giving it a cookie.
You can't reward the dog for not chasing the cat but you can
reward it for doing something you've asked of it.
10) There is no playing ball, running or chasing about the
house, either by dogs, cats or humans while the dog and cat
are out together. This is because care needs to be taken to
see that the dog doesn't go into prey drive. This needs to
continue throughout this entire process.
11) Supervise the interaction and after 7-10 days where the
dog has not had to be corrected, the prong and leash control
can be eliminated. Even if you never had to correct the dog,
it's important to wait 7-10 days. Leave on the muzzle. The
dog and cat can not be left unsupervised. If the dog chases
the cat during this period, it's back to item #7.

Uhm, although you addressed this to Fred, I assume the above was
directed at me. Why on earth is it so difficult for you to believe that
someone who is not involved with protection training would not be
familiar with what "flanking" means in that venue?
I've said several times that I've only heard the term used to
describe what you call "switching" in Schutzhund.
So what?
Is the concept of someone admitting they don't know something so
foreign to you that you assume they are being deceptive?
For what possible purpose? Jerry, you're paranoid.
My ignorance in protection training has nothing to do with you.
It isn't all about you, believe it or not.

I now know how the word "flanking" is used differently in the 2
arenas,
*(CARE TO EXPLAIN HOWE FLANKING IS "USED DIFFERENTLY"

but why in the world do you insist it isn't used to mean

used. Striking, yes, switching, no. And none of those terms are
in Koehler's basic book.

Okay, we've already established that flanking would have no place
in your training of protection dogs, and I understand that you don't
feel it is a valid way to measure his dependability in the face of
pain. But I didn't really find an answer to my question - How do

So, Jerry, I take it that you decline my offer to arrange a real
discussion of training methods I favor? If so, please refrain from
inventing a fantasy version of what you think those methods are.
I'm more than happy to openly discuss how I train without your spin.
Btw, you continue to shoot yourself in the logical foot. You dispute

"flanking", then reprint the original post where I clearly used the
word to mean exactly that.

Like your Llama Spit post, where you parked your dog on a down/stay
command and the dog broke to avoid getting Llama spit in his face,
and YOU didn't LIKE that your dog broke his command to protect
himself.

I see. You're going to use another dog abusing Thug to defend your
argument that switching is flanking, flanking doesn't exist, you
never said it, and you don't jerk, choke, shock, beat, and kill dogs
to train them.

Gee, I've never had any difficulty getting my dogs to bite deeply

So I've been told by people far more experienced with field

That doesn't suprise me, since it would be inconsistent with what
you have posted here. But I have to ask again - how do you know
that a dog you have protection trained will hold a bite through
aversity or pain? How do you proof that bite?
*(The Puppy Wizard's dogs WOULD KILL YOU FOR HURTIN

Hitting dogs - useless and abusive and stupid (except for specific
training situations like flanking a Schutzhund dog.) Electronic collars -
great in the hands of those who know how & when to use them.
Lots of potential for abuse in the hands of those who don't.
*(LIKE YOU!)
Choke chains - useful as a training collar. See electronic collar,
same thing. Prong collar - Very useful as a training collar. I prefer
it to a choke chain because it is less forceful, the way I use it.
*(Yeah. You've posted 3 different ways you use the pronged
spiked pinch choke collar, EACH CONTRADICTING THE OTHER 2!!!)
See electronic collar, same thing. Crates - Wonderful tool for
housebreaking, transporting a dog safely, and dealing with
a sick or injured dog. Abusive when overused.
Beginning to see a theme here?
*(Yeah! YOU'RE A LIAR AND DOG ABUSER!)
Tools are as good or as bad as the use they are put to.

If you have to do things to your dog to train him that you
would rather not have to do, then you shouldn't be doing
them. If you have a dog trainer who tells you to jerk your
dog around, choke him, pinch his ears, or twist his toes,
shock, shake, slap, scold, hit, chin cuff, scruff shake or
punish your dog in any manner, that corrections
are appropriate, that the dog won't think of you as the
punisher, or that corrections are not harmful, or if they
can't train your dog to do what you want, look for a
trainer that knows HOWE.

You're applying your usual sanctimonious view to this discussion and
avoiding what doesn't suit you. Jerry's stock material includes
numerous posts in which RPDB regulars describe, in their own words,
the lack of success they experience training and controlling their own
dogs. I think that's a pretty useful reality check for some of these
high-minded wimmin. Many, if not most, don't even have the basics of
obedience training in hand. Jerry does.

Nope. He lies constantly about me and Frankie's ruptured vertebral disk.
He says I choked him on lead and collar, but he can't produce anything
where I said I did that.
Frankie's never had a collar while at our house: he's had a harness from
day one. We use a flexi, not a leash, and he's never, ever been yanked or
jurked or choked on it. Instead, his injury is of genetic origin, but that
doesn't stop him from making up some dumb crap to try to impute blame or,
what I suspect more, to try to hurt me.
Needless to say, Tara, that no sensible person takes Jerry's claims
seriously.

Newsflash: California to replace Florida as the national
electoral laughingstock. More at 10.
Nope. That's totally inaccurate. He not only makes things up out of whole
cloth, but alters what he's clipped out of the archives. He adds entire
words and phrases to people's own writing, and in at least one case has
taken two people's posts on a similar subject, creatively cut'n'pasted them
together, added some words of his own, then put quote marks around the whole
concoction and repeatedly re-posted it with deliberate attribution to one
person.
The most egregious of his recent fabrications are his claims that Matt
caused Rocky's epilepsy by "choking and jerking" with a "pronged spiked
choke collar", and that Chad injured Frankie's spine by "choking and
jerking".

Naaah! Why let the facts get in the way of a good story?

Hmm. That fails to explain, however, taking two posts by two different
people, cut'n'pasting them together, ADDING words that weren't in either
post, and then putting quotation marks around the concoction and
deliberately attributing it to one of the two original posters.
The vinegar is supposed to HURT the EYES. You sez
you don't spray it in the eyes, therefore the VINEGAR
has NO VALUE.
