I followed the thread about marrow [soup] bones and not to cook them. Several
folks recommended freezing the bones to kill any bacteria. I was wondering if
anyone had ever tried microwaving the bones to kill bacteria......just for a
minute or so.....and then obviously letting them cool before giving to our pooches.

It just seems that bacteria would still be present in the raw meat...even
after freezing. And that microwaving the bones would be safer, and still not
make the bone itself brittle.

Just a random curious thought so don't nuke me :-)

Bacteria present on bones and raw meat doesn't generally harm dogs. You
might want to get on one of the many raw diet email lists and meet some
of the thousands of people who are now feeding their dogs a totally raw
diet, based on raw meaty bones. Even if you don't change your dog's
diet, it should help you with your worried about bacteria on marrow
bones. I would not microwave any bones for even 1 minute...

If you want to check out a raw diet list, go to http://www.onelist.com
and search for raw diet or natural diet and then subscribe to one or two
of them. Another big one is the wellpet list; they have a web page but
I don't know the address. You could probably find it with a search
engine.

Freezing doesn't kill bacteria as they just lay dormant !!

I've nuked my bones for my dogs for the last 20 years with no ill effect.

i just microwaved a marrow bone for my dog and was surprised that after 2 minutes the amount of fat that came out of that bone. my neighbor gave me marrow bones for my 1 yr old dog and told me to microwave them. I am researching the best way to cook them for my girl. These have to be better than her alternative, which is a plastic hanger which is reduced to little pieces of plastic that I hope she doesn't eat.
