Hi there. Does anyone have any creative ideas to keep neighbors' dogs out of
a large area? We have 1 dog that we want to be able to run around, but we
want to keep the neighbors' dogs out. Fencing a large area gets expensive.
We were hoping that maybe somebdy could help us out with a more creative
solution.

Does anyone have any experience with the ultrasonic "fences" or any other
alternative approaches?

Thanks,
Pamela

Hi Pamela,

The ultrasonic fences won't keep the other dog out of your yard. I assume
you are talking about the radio fences/invisible fences that your dog wears
a receiver. I'm also guessing that you've already talked to the neighbor
about their dog being in your yard? I can't think of a product that would
keep their dog out, (like some of the "dog be gone" things) that wouldn't
also give the same message to your dog.
We have an invisible fence, but it does not keep other animals out of our
yard... unless perhaps you were to get a receiver for your neighbor's dog,
and train it not to cross the boundary INTO your yard??? sort of a reverse
thing (well, you asked for creative !! )
Fence sounds like the only reliable alternative. I'll be interested to see
what people come up with.

Good Luck

Hi Pam,

I truly don't have any alternative suggestions. I've never heard of
anything (except a fence) that would keep other dogs out and your dog
in.

Please, for the safety of your dog, fence your yard. It only takes one
distraction -- such as a loose neighborhood dog -- for an unfenced dog
to bolt away and get hurt or killed. That would be *your* fault, and
it's entirely preventable.

I know fences are expensive. They're not always attractive either. But
they sure do help to keep a dog safe.

A fence is really the only thing that will work. You not only need to
keep the neighbor dog out, you need to keep your dog in. Fencing can be
a lot cheaper to put up oneself rather than having it done. It is also
possible to get used fencing. We got enough rolls of 6' metal security
fencing to do our whole yard from a scrap metal yard. You could also
check with building contractors or places that sell used construction
materials. I've also seen fences made of wooden pallets standing on end
and zigzagged, then painted. Pallets are cheap to free, depending on
where one lives. They don't make a high fence, but they do look nice -
like a glorified picket fence.

And a fence can be a lot cheaper than a vet bill for a dog that's been
hit by a car, both money-wise and emotionally.

I don't know what your relationship with the neighbor is, but if he just
doesn't care and lets his dog freely roam the neighborhood and go uninvited
into other people's yards, you could call the police. A "dog at large"
ticket may make the owner behave! Of course, then your dog couldn't be off
the leash either.
